Should phones using HSDPA become extremely hot?

I would like someone to tell me if this is normal. I bought a zv50 last saturday so today is my last day to apply for OBF..

Problem is if i use HSDPA for about 5 mins the phone gets extremely hot. Is this normal due to the high speed data transfer?


On an unrelated note: does anyone else have this phone because even if i put the speaker volume all the way up, i can barely hear the person on the other end.. is this a common problem with this phone?

The heat is generated by either the electronics heating up (working hard) or the battery discharging rapidly. How long does the battery last?

Maybe see if you can't do a test with another similar model at the store where you bought it.

Thanks for the quick response... i was at the store yesterday, and the guy behind the counter said he doesn't think its normal and i should OBF swap the phone as i might experience problems with it later. They unfortunately did not have another one to compare to.

Regarding the battery life, its EXTREMELY short when using HSDPA...so thats a great thoery as the heat comes from the center area of the battery on both sides, so i think you might have solved that one :)

The heat does not bother me one bit..im just scared its not normal and other components inside might be negatively affected. If not, im happy.

Now theres just the speaker issue. You said you did test the phone a while ago. Did you notice that the speaker was extremely quiet even on max volume?

Now just one more thing..when i received the phone, the seal on the box was broken. When i got home and switched the phone on, the battery had 2 bars and worked for ages. This i dislike aswell as i don't know how much it was used before i got it.

Modern battery technology is vey complex, I'd stay away from overheating batteries, they tend to want to explode. I recently dropped (read crashed) a LiPo battery and it popped!

The fact that the battery does not last and overheats points to a problem, either the battery is faulty or the phone is. Either way, I'd suggest they swap it for you.

On top of that, you've got the speaker problem. It would not have passed with sub-standard volumes levels.

Sounds like you got a lemon. :(

haaahahahahaa... i've never heard that term to be honest.

My SE gets warm when I run it as a 3G modem, also the battery does not last that long, maybe 30 minutes, I usually just plug the charger in while I work online. After about 3 hours of 3-g-ing the phone is quite warm.

V3G - Does lemon not have something to do with a sour deal? jikes, I can already taste lemon now.. :)

I'm not surprised, you're basically running the phone as if you're making a 3 hour call.

AFAIK, the saying came from a Volkswagen Beetle add (around the 50's / 60's), where the inspector failed a car, stating "It's a lemon". From there it went into common use whenever you wanted to convey you got a dud unit.

They had a massive campaign to get consumer confidence up on these new, funny, small cars.

while we are at it maybe someone should give us some more obscure sayings for us to look up? thanks for the Apology V3G. oh and just keeping in theme with the topic (which is staying off topic) i see that Vodacom has upgraded its Tower Thingy (yes i call it that still) on the Port Edward Lighthouse. does this mean that 3G is on the cards? could you check for me?

I saw the phone online somewhere and went into a Vodashop and asked...

I had family top-up, but the phone woulda cost me 1.4k, so i went to Everyday Weekend and it only cost me R300. Not sure yet if i'm gonna regret that decision.
 
The phone is available at Metro (Vodacom) for FREE on weekend everyday, plus you get a FREE bluetooth headset & a dvd player.
