Should the dealer pay for this..

Yep, she couldn't wait and needed the car so she accepted. Yeah I guess hey, just makes me so fkn mad..
How many times have your disks been skimmed or replaced?

This is the first time, car now has 66 000km on the clock.
Then what's the problem? They're probably due for it anyway. Like the pads, disks are disposable items and need replacing from time to time.

The problem is that there was nothing wrong 3 months ago and now they need to be skimmed. But all good.

Yeah, but between then and now you did a 6000km trip to KNP over the holiday season, right? 3-4mm is probably the minimum amount of pad you want left before you change them. Your front has 2.9mm according to the pic you posted.

Dealer A should have noted the mm depth on the report they gave you after the service. If they didn't then you deserve to be a little miffed but at 66000km it's reasonable to skim/replace your disks.

I'd be more pissed at Dealer B's quote to skim. You could replace them for less than that.

Dealer B could also be talking **** so don't assume Dealer A is in the wrong.

Also you said it made the noise when NOT BRAKING so how on earth could it possibly be the pads that are worn then?

Sounds to me more like a stone got in between the dust cover and the disc and that made the noise and could possibly have done damage but unlikely.

I couldn't agree more. The whole thing just left me a bit pissed off. I am sure they took her for a ride, but o well it is done now. Won't be doing this at a dealer again.

Just wasn't sure if it was the brakes as the noise wasn't present when braking, but more when driving slowly and turning the wheel. I will try look for the report on previous service.

Sweeet

Edit: Had a look at the invoice for the 60 000km service and nothing noted on there. Should maybe get a hold of the job card to see if it was on there. I specifically asked the knob if the brakes were good as we were travelling over the December holidays. He said o ja all is still good to go for a long time still.

Dealers are notorious for taking the piss with brakes.

You could REPLACE the discs and pads for less money than the skimming they quoted on going to someone else.

Yep, and that is exactly why I took it to Mazda and not a brake shop as I honestly thought it was something else. But too late now, all is done. Learnt my lesson.

To skim the discs sounds hectic but they just remove the wheel and hook the machine up and let it run for like 20sec or so then done. Dealership does not have those machines they probably outsourcing it. Company I work for outsources it. We get charged like R180 per disc and charge the customer R280. You got ripped wow.

There is 3mm of material left on both sets of pads. They do not need replacing and they have not damaged discs.
Dealer B is taking you for a ride.

Source of noise is elsewhere

Exactly what I was thinking but I couldn't be there to help the SO fight this. Lesson learnt though, an expensive one.

3mm... it's time and disks wear.

He he, I'm setting up a dealer for failure on Thursday when I'm sending the wife in to take car for 30,000km service.

I'll be checking all of it on Wednesday of course so I want to see what bullshit they come up with.

3mm is fine though. It's not going to damage the disk.
And if the disk is worn, then replacement is indicated, not skimming.
