So those who want to scrap income tax and instead increase VAT how would you make VAT progressive so that poorer people don't pay disproportionately more tax relative to their incomes?

VAT should not be scrapped because we will be paying an ungodly amount on our total income as both a business and as an employee. Remember, SARS is about money. If they can't get it one way, they will get it some other way.

The system as it is now works. I am sorry to say, but it is "the better" system.

VAT is one tax that can be modified to match needs of citizens and government finances. Although this is just opinion, I suspect that VAT is also a tax that is levied most efficiently and cheaply.

I pity any country that thinks it can survive without a functional Tax system. Reducing VAT on foods will burden other goods like electronics, transport and fuel. This will have a massive negative effect on our living standard.

Our VAT system is a good one, it is one of the best in the world by any standard. That said, its implementation and management needs a complete overhaul, complete transparency and must be kept liable for overspending and mismanagement.

In short, keeping our TAX system honest will do more than anything else.

The beauty of VAT is that it can be tailored to changing needs and is less easy to evade than other taxes.
