We live in boksburg and i have bought a new pc (seem i work in i.t.)

I use a 3g dongle and registered a sim card and use pay as you go internet - i buy bundles off fnb's prepaid section i can get 500mb for R170...this lasts me about a month or even two at a stretch - should i move to ADSL? Axxess seems to have the best deal. Funny i work for a farely large ISP and would never use them...

Im happy with the speed and dont use it that much, sometimes it struggles but usually its ok for what we need

Because moving to adsl on the slowest package works out like R350 a month incl line rental...crazy?

If you use only 500mb pm, you should rather stay on 3G. It will work out cheaper.

If you really want ASDL, just rent a line (with telkom) and use FNBs free ASDL. FNB gives you a max of 5GB pm FREE :)

Did not know that, might have to move to FNB after all...

No stay with 3G. I think the last time I calculated it the breakeven is roughly at 2gigs.

If you decide to change anyway, go for afrihost not axxess (Though I believe the one bought the other recently).

Is that R350 a 384? With who?

Get the Vodacom 2GB Topup for R149 per month. Much faster than ADSL.

Max from ADSL where I live is 0.8mbps (on a 4mbps line), I get 10x that speed from Vodacom 3G.

And its cheaper than ADSL - thanks for screwing ADSL up, Telkom !!!

How much does it cost if you want to use the free 2GB or 3GB (depends what account you have with FNB methinks) ADSL offering from FNB?
Only Telkom costs?

Data is by far the cheapest of all the costs. You will pay around R300 for line rentals and that for a slow 384 kbit/sec line before sending/receiving a single byte of data.

As many people have mentioned, it depends on how much data you are planning to use and for what purpose.

If you want to use more than say about 3gb/month, then moving to adsl will probably be a better option. If you are a hardcore gamer then adsl will also be a better option.

If not, I wouldn't bother because the entry level 348Kbit lines from Telkom are just torturous to use and your 3g experience will be way better.

How much is the line rentals? How do you arrive at the R300? TO use FNB free 2GB or 3GB, do you need an ISP too, or does FNB deliver this service? *confused*

Analog voice line rental - R140
ADSL "connectivity" rental - R152

If you're with FNB as an account holder the data (ISP) would be free.

And the voice line rental is compusory even if i'm not interested in a normal voice line?
(Sorry to OP for hijacking this thread! :) )
