After the latest asylum seeker application by white South Africans, there’s been a lot of talk about whether or not they should be allowed to apply for this status in countries around the world.

The first issue is the difference between refugees and asylum seekers.

A refugee is a person who, according to the UN Convention on Refugees "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country".

This means that even the definition of refugee is somewhat subjective. A person can believe themselves to be a refugee if they believe that they are subject to persecution.An asylum seeker is someone who believes they are, but no international country has agreed with them yet.

But what is persecution?

Persecution is the systematic mistreatment of an individual or group by another group.

Here, too, the definition is subjective. To a non white South African, it may seem ludicrous that a white South African, in their middle class house, with their middle class life, might feel persecuted. They’re probably right – in some ways.

It’s far more dangerous to live in a township than it is to live behind high walls and electric fences, with armed private security on call, in the suburbs.

But when you scratch the surface, the reason for that feeling of persecution isn’t hard to spot.

Just yesterday, our president admitted that in his youth, himself and his friends were plotting to murder white people. Julius Malema called whites criminals, and JZ still sings shoot the boer. Manyi’s views are well documented, and there are plenty of others who have made plain their views on white people.

You may argue, however, that sticks and stones break bones, but words will never harm, but what about the history of the ANC? Bombing, burning, murder. All of these things were a part of the struggle, and it’s not a stretch to say that the ANC is once again in a struggle – a struggle to retain it’s rulership.

Considering that the only thing required to apply for political asylum is the BELIEF that you may some day be the target of violence, it's not all that hard to make the leap between talking about these things, and acting on them, is it?

The fact is, asylum, like the belief in persecution, is a subjective thing. There’s no shortage of evidence that some people at least would not shed a tear if every white person in South Africa today were to be magically erased, and it’s no stretch from there to believe that in the absence of magic, less ethereal means may become an option.

So, while some may say that asylum seeking for white South Africans is ludicrous, I would reserve my judgement. I think, if anything, the next five years in South Africa’s history will tell the tale. I hope it is all a case of paranoia.

White people are scared. They're scared that the ultimate legacy of apartheid will be rabid policies of revenge on people who did not have any direct involvement.

Ask yourself. If you believed that you and your family were the target of violence for whatever reason, would you not try to get away, by whatever means necessary?

Where is the reverse Apartheid? Where are the blacks only beaches? Where are the night passes for whites? Where is the denial of education for white children? Where is there no interracial marriages allowed? Where are whites' human rights violated? Where have whites been forced to relocate to squatters?

I can think of aa and bee. Did you know that white children are prevented from competing in sport at national level to give black kids a chance? And then theres the black on white crime thing.

Then white people can't seek asylum in the US or UK either as those countries have equal opportunity employment policies not favouring white people.

Exactly when i see a sign saying no whites allowed then i will believe we are back in apartheid, until then it is just a bunch of whining white people. If anything the black folk should be more worried than the white folk because they are more likely to get raped and murdered.

This is a rainbow nation there is no black on white crime, there is just crime now. We separate colour too much now.

Some white person gets murdered people scream genocide, when 40 black people are murdered in a day that is fine but god forbid a whitey gets nailed then we give a shyte.
 
Well one thing I can do without is government telling me that I am a rapist, thief and killer because of the colour of my skin. The fact that even educated black MyBB posters don't see a problem with this sort of inflammatory hatred shows that there are very scary attitudes prevailent amongst the vast majority of the population.

If allowing me to get refugee status gives me more options to move to the first wolrd I'm not complaining too much.

Agreed. It's nice to think we're (whites) special, but people of all colours get killed all the time. Unfortunately our Rainbow (nation) include red.

If there was no Apartheid, there would be no need for AA and BEE as there would not be a need for correcting the injustices of the past. People must get over themselves, get off their high horse and stop thinking that AA and BEE are policies meant to exert revenge on white people.

I guess you are not a DA supporter? They have AA and BEE as their policies?

Well you need to move with the times and partner with a black to get the tenders. Not difficult. All you need is a black run company.

Comes with some risks yes but the reward is worth the risk. My father has a client who went this route and picked up massive tenders for road works. Work with the system and quit moaning about it. They are trying to empower a group of people who were allowed nothing and i honestly believe if AA and BEE was not around we would not be seeing blacks in powerful positions.

Look around you bud, this country is awesome and for the most part whites live damn well. When we are put into squatter camps, denied access to certain area's then come talk to me about this nonsense. Until then we live well, have good jobs and in general we have awesome lives.

We moan too much, we act like victims when the reality is we are not victims. We have freedom and opportunity. Could the blacks say that under the white government?

We have equal rights and sure blacks are more likely to get a job or big tender but what did you expect? The government to let their people continue working for the white man forever? We can still find decent jobs.

I don't know if these people genuinely feel persecuted or they're simply opportunistic liars. It is presumably people who cannot get into those countries legally otherwise.

I don't agree with those kind of exclusive organisations, but they typically do arise in scenarios where a group has been discriminated against for decades or even centuries.

The problem with inter racial murders in South Africa is that the 1:1 ratio is very much skewed against the whites! And is not just a bit! White people are targeted by criminals because their perceived wealth. In other words blacks kill white because they think the loot will be bigger. For a white it does not matter why he got killed what matter is - he got killed. That is why I like Australia so much. They say is a spade if they see one.
