I have an issue with my left shoulder, only effecting bench press, push ups.
I reckon I over trained on chest exercises and carried on when I should of rested.

I have rested up for 6+ months now and haven't touched pressing exercises , tried yesterday and still same issue even after warming up.

Pain in shoulder joint area on the start of the bench press, when you take bar off the top, no pain when at the bottom touching chest.

Would a general GP be the person to see or some sort of Physio, don't want to waste my time and money going to wrong person?

Guessing a rotator cuff.
Are you sure you are retracting your shoulder blades fully when benching to take load off the shoulders? Had the same issue and after fixing form it went away. Just asking.

GP is probably going to refer you to a physio anyway. So start there. They will then refer to an orthopedic surgeon if it is more serious.

Have the same issue - rotatorcuff problem.

Possibly a combination of incorrect form ad unhealed damage - shoulders take ages to heal, there are specific exercises that will help you get there, but see a physio and go from there.

Alternatively, amputation and special olympics?

Approaching 40 soon , still in decent shape.
Thought I would be gymming until well into my 60's BUT alas mind is willing body is not.

I have been looking at some "remedies" on Youtube to fix form and also stretch the tendons, release the nerves etc.
Will try those everyday as prescribed, see how it goes.

40!!? bra you are almost dead.

you should go see a physio, medical aid usually pays for it in full if you are on any kind of decent plan.

Face pulls, light weight side raises and shoulder rotation.
I have the exact same issue, orthopedic said take it easy.
Now everytime I get pain I ask my wife to give me a massage by standing on my shoulder(her hands are too weak to apply enough pressure) which releases the pressure on the muscles.

P.s. I have heard micro-dosing deca-durobolin helps with such joint problems. Never tried it myself but just thought of mentioning it.

I had the same problem. Was a torn rotator cuff and thus had to have an op to have it fixed

I also have the same issue, when I exercise things get sore, so I usually avoid anything too strenuous, that way the pain stays away

So tried face-pulls yesterday as best I can, it definitely releases the shoulder joint.

I followed this guys guide, the second exercise helped the most.
Just from single session my shoulder isn't clicking anymore.

Tried the same as in the video but I see others using another grip so will see how it goes, I'll try this again today.

Pinched probably.

Let me guess you sit in front of a computer large amounts of time per day both arms forward and leaning a bit more forward.

Best God damn exercise on earth besides the dead lift is a shoulder press (not seated or behind the neck or any of that kak. Take a barbell and lift that thing to the roof - you'll fix your shoulder pinch in days. And build enormous amounts of strength.)

If any of you are going to the gym just do yourself a favor and read his book or at the very least just watch this one video.

Especially if you are going into your late 40s early 50s but want to build strength.

For OP, 6 minutes and 50 seconds in explains why this will help with your shoulder.

Overhead press and deadlifts, fck everything else it's a bonus.

I've had an impingement in my right shoulder about 7 years ago, similar symptoms. You can do the "empty can test " yourself and see if it hurts. Could not even bench 40kg without it hurting back then. Nowadays I don't have shoulder pain anymore but the effects of those days are still very clear and have transpired into upper back/trap issues as my right shoulder is several magnitudes more stiffer than my left, it's a constant struggle.

I do suggest focusing on strengthening your back first and leaving any overhead exercises (especially if it hurts), as some suggested to start with face-pulls, and focus on your bench form and definitely see a good physio
