I will tell you there is no chance that Omega still works today,
why do you say this ?
i have a 1970 omega seamaster chrono - works 100% - in constant use, goes swimming, takes a shower etc - just keeps going.
bought the thing in a pawn shop in durban (point rd) around 1995 for R150.
was offered R25k for it end of last year.
its rather unusual - has an internal rotating bezel, operated by the crown on the left side of the watch

also have one of these - mid 60s - 100% good.
these watches simply need a service every 3yrs or so, and will keep going forever.
bought it from the very same shop a few months after the omega, for a whole R90

not sure what was going on in that shop.
one day i'm in there and see a low wide bowl, the kind of thing for fruit. i'm thinking it would make a rather nice salad bowl.
it had a frosted finish.
in the shop it was filled with old fishing crap.
i ask the owner how much.
R50, he says.
i take it to the counter to pay, but start emptying out the fishing crap.
no no no , everything R50. he thought i was trying to get some kind of discount be removing the fishing stuff.
paid for it, left the shop, and dumped the fishing stuff in the closest bin.
get home, let it soak in detergent, then pop it into the dishwasher.
take it out again and realise its rather damn nice.
flip it over - etched underneath "r lalique"
a frikking lalique bowl for R50.

it got broken by a drunk friend - easy come easy go.
just did a search for the same one - - USD$ 2000 , thank you very much !

well fark me with a rusty pitchfork - did a bit more googling.
$3300 for the bowl from lalique - - - over R50k for a bowl !!!

That's a really cool Omega you have there. Also confused by the comment you're replying to, these will last forever if you take care of it (like any watch really)

Because they need service every few years.

The casino might need a new battery every 8-10 years.

my post was in response to this:
I will tell you there is no chance that Omega still works today, but that Casio still will, despite the battering it took along with you on the pub crawl.

Because they need service every few years.
costs very little, unless there are broken / defective parts needing replacing.
otherwise, a service is little more than internal cleaning, lubrication, and replacing any seals - call it a round R1k.
R1k = R330 p/a, or R30 p/m - less than a beer a month
The casino might need a new battery every 8-10 years.
sure
i happen to have a thing for automatic and manual watches.
some may like pineapples while others prefer roadkill.

trying to compare an auto / manual watch with a battery driven watch is somewhat like comparing a speedboat to a light bulb..
neither is specifically better or worse than the other.

of batteries and seiko - this lying in a drawer for years:

What new watch would you buy for R 2k - R 3k?
I might be biased but, Casio Duro

I might be biased but, Casio Duro

this is the only answer.
