ShowMax in SA: this is how it works

I have my Auto DNS setup in D-link router with Unotelly and Netflix. Once-off setup is a bit tricky but anybody who is able to google can do it in no time at all. It is really not that daunting and once it all works there is no looking back! Put in the time and little bit of effort to get Netflix working and it kicks butt.
(accessing on Xbox 360)

Agreed. The setup initially can be a bit daunting (Or it will look like that). But it should not take a non-tech savvy individual more than 30 minutes to have everything sorted. And once it's done it's done.

Showmax: Meh.

Show me the HD!!!
I have been following the other Showmax threads and the video quality/resolution of appalling. Even on fast connections.
Thanks, but no thanks.

Kevin Lancaster: How about doing a proper follow up article about the quality and other problems that real users have? I have read the MyBB review which claimed a fairy tale 720p resolution, but I don't believe that for one second. The feedback on the Showmax thread is conclusive that the resolution is well below 720p on a normal connection.

I can categorically confirm that the Showmax stream is 720p. I know it because I tested it this past weekend on a 2014 Samsung Smart TV with a 20mbps line. (Game of Thrones) The audio comes out clear but there is indeed an issue with the syncing.

How it works:

Step 1: You give Naspers money

Step 2: Naspers laugh all the way to the bank

And a lot of people here don't mind doing that, usually the same kind that repeatedly votes ANC, and cries here about the ANC this and Jacob Zuma that...

Even though Showmax is presented at a good price point, I cancelled mine because I am not too impressed by the contents. Too many old movies (where are the new releases?) and a lack of series (no Breaking Bad!) and few documentaries . For now it is back to Roku and Plex.

Yah, 720p only if you have God's own connection. 20mbs line?! You should not require that type of bandwidth to watch 720p. I can watch 720p on Youtube and other channels on my 4MB connection. But Showmax is just lazy with their un-optimized stream and hosting.

Would you be able to watch Showmax on a TV that is not a Smart TV? Currrently streaming Netflix via my PS3, but Showmax doesn't seem to have an app for devices other than Andriod and iOS.

but IS owns MWEB.
and Is owns AntFarm.
hmmm..... they should think outside the box those chaps..

You had the right guy the first time ;-)

I've been watching an episode of Band of Brothers almost every night since I got the service, and only on Sunday did I have problems connecting to the service.

I reported it (haven't heard anything back), but the following night things were working again.

I have asked Jan to please follow up on the sound sync issue. Nothing happened. I just cancelled my auto sub and let the 7 days run out. No way I'm paying for that shyte.

Sorry, I either missed or lost track of that.

I was giving the guys some time to iron out the kinks before whacking them with questions. Now that people are starting to pay for the service, though, it needs to work properly.

Thanks Jan, would love to know their feedback regarding the sync issue

Been watching a lot, also had some issues on Sunday. But I just closed and re-opened the app (samsung smart) and it connected again. So far so good, the video quality to me is very acceptable.

The interface is a bit cumbersome and the video/sound sync is an issue, but by just delaying the audio a bit, it's fine.

I will keep my subscription for now ;)
