Shutting down your pc

gru@Ogre:~> uptime
01:00:14 up 41 days, 10:09, 3 users, load average: 0.44, 0.34, 0.26

Dunno, will it? :p

mines on pretty much all day. but off at night and usually when im not at home.

U should turn it off to conserve energy

depends really..mechanical devices suffer wear when starting up, so hdd's could suffer more? I usually run things i don't want to do at night or rather morning while i am sleeping.. so anti virus, downloads, indexing, defraging etc all while i am not there. So i rarely turn off the entire machine.. I do however turn off the monitor

Being a laptop user, I never turn my laptop off. Close the lid and let it sleep. It just saves time on startup. Same story with my desktop. It frustrates the hell out of me when I get to the pc and just wanna check something quickly, but have to wait for it to boot up.

I have mine on 24/7 and only had one m/b failure in 6 years, mostly due to dust on the northbridge fan, as well as one PSU failure ... if the PC is on all the time, you must clean it our regularly to prevent dust buildup on the fans... :)

I turn it off mainly to perform maintenance or switch components. Otherwise there isn't much point. I suppose it probably uses up a lot more electricity on standby but anyway whatever...

A PC uses A LOT of power on Boot-up. Almost equivalent to the amount of power it uses running for 4 hours. (I'm not 100% sure on the amount of hours).
So, If you have to boot up your PC once a day, it's more conservative. But when you get to 3 times a day, its just better to leave it on 24/7.

I also leave my pc on 24/7 and when I am away I only switch off the screen but when I am away on holiday then I will shutdown my pc and sometimes unplug it.

Are u sure it's that much? I switch my PC on sometimes 2 or 3 times a day and some days it stays on 24/7.

Q: If some components with metallic parts heat up and cool down, heat up and cool down, heat up and cool down, what do you think will eventually happen?

A: Dry joints probably.

Agreed - and with my older PC, it's not quite a 30 seond boot up either ...

I am booting my computer up a lot these days because of maintenance. I think something has gone wrong under the hood tbh...

That's what I remembered hearing... I'll try to find a factual reference on this and get back to you.

Keep in mind, it takes a lot more power to get things to build up momentum, than it takes to keep them moving. So, I won't be surprised if its more than that.
