Sick of Windows K**

After a month or two of issues which seemed almost impossible to fix and many formats/re installs of software on my windows 8, I've decided to say "screw this sh*t, I'm going Linux".

Any advice? I'm busy downloading Ubuntu 14 (Ive dual booted Ubuntu a while back and know a thing or two about the OS) its going to be my only/main OS.

I basically just use my PC for LoL, research and lots of Microsoft word'ing for my studies and obviously browsing and so on.

I know there are work arounds to make LoL and other games work on Linux, I'm just worried about the Microsoft word as I need to have something very similar to it, in terms of functionality and extras, for my research.

This thread is basically a confidence booster to go ahead and go full Linux :whistle: :D

Use google docs. They now fully support word documents.

If you don't mine me asking what trouble are you having with Windows? If you decide to go linux, please post how you find it. What features you like, and which you miss. Have you used Ubuntu or other linux distro before? I am quite intrigued as to how easy you find the switch.

Ah well these is your initial problem, you see W7 is prefect while W8 is K**.


What was the PC doing BTW?
 
I feel your pain, OP. Went Linux Mint for a few months, but the whole Word / Excel thing was the deal breaker for me. Too many Wine issues, formatting issues, speed issues, - you name it.

Libre Office was OK but after a while I started to realise, reluctantly, just why MS Office is the leader of the pack, despite the cost.

Back on Win 7 again. Just too many issues I couldn't work around with Linux, as much as I would prefer to be MS-free.

At the moment with windows 8.1:
Just some minor issues with my HP 1515 advanced ink printer. But that is probably because I have it linked via my router.

I've used a few distros before wee back in the day when you had to use something like druid, install, configure x and pray x starts up. Thought CorelLinux was going to be the answer, but that went away and nowadays its a bit easier was what it was ;)

Linux is not going to be the answer until a few players really starts playing the field and not just wetting their toes...

Yeah, windows 7 was actually much better. Where do I start... First I couldn't boot into Windows at all. And then it gave me this error,

Your PC couldn't start properly

A required device isn't connected or cant be accessed

Error code: 0xc000000f

Now, a few guys at Carb gave me some tips on fixing it. I spent hours trying and nothing worked at all. Gave up and formatted.

Then I had to go on and re install everything!

Not even two weeks later, my screen started flickering just after it booted into the desktop. Like it kept refreshing/restarting the desktop. Spent hours again researching, saw things like driver issues etc, tried everything, nothing worked. Formatted and again re installed everything!

Logged in today, PC takes 10mins to load (Ive got an SSD which I have tested a few times for errors and normally takes like 2mins to load) and then I cant access any personal files. Tried to give myself administrator access, again, doesn't work. Dont have time to research the issues here and fix, AGAIN.

So all in all, I've had enought of this hoor ;):D

I will def let you know. Its going to take some time but I think it'll be worth it! I have used Ubuntu for a very short time before, so basically starting new.

Thats my only issue as well :/ But Ill give Linux a go for a few months and see how it goes... who knows maybe Ill go back to Win7 as well:confused:

I haven't tried windows 8.1 yet. I was going to upgrade at the begining but then I read some posts where guys were having issues with LoL. So I just left it. Maybe Ill give it go if Ubuntu doesnt work out. Right now though... I dont want any version of Windows. Just dont have time to keep fixing issues and giving myself admin rights to my own PC :wtf::whistle:

Haha, everybody said it was a hardware issue. Ive tested and changed the ram, tested the SSD, even the PSU just for the sake of it. Nothing worked.

Windows is not for dumb people unfortunately. That said, hardware compatibility will always be an issue with less mainstream chips and devices initially on a new OS.

I thought LoL had a Linux client, but apparently not (apparently an easy how-to guide here: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1946188). Otherwise simply switch to DotA for native Linux support. You can get Firefox for browsing or Chromium (basically Chrome), depending on your tastes. You can use LibreOffice for writing/reading MSWord docs. It has full .docx, .xlsx, etc. support, however no ribbon bar at the top, so you'll need to get used to the old interface style again. Alternatively, if your writing up can be done using LaTeX, just download TeXWorks.

Thanks man, I've read that how-to guide. LoL shouldn't be an issue. Ill be going with Chromium thanks :D LibreOffice does sound like its the best option, or Google docs could work as well

Does Google docs have an offline client? I prefer having an app installed on my PC instead of being dependent on an internet connection.

You should do just fine with Linux. It's not the hassle it used to be 5 years ago. Easy to use, and most of your apps will run fine on Linux.
