Side mirror questions

I couldn't think of a more accurate title, so I used one that is most closely related to my question. I know enough cars to tell when they might be having a problem, but I don't really keep up to date with every new feature etc.

Question 1: I've seen a few cars now that have a small orange light in the mirror. Does it serve a purpose or is it just to make the car more visible?

Question 2: I think it is a Land Rover that has a box attached to the back window. Surely that box is always in your line of sight when you look in the mirror? Especially the bright orange one that I saw this morning.

Could have asked Google, but it's better sometimes to get human answers/opinions. Thanks.
 
A small orange light in the side mirror, visible to other motorists, sure sounds like that could be an indicator light.....
 
Q1 - Lane assist. Visual indicator that a vehicle could be driving in the blind spot / lane next to you
Q2 - LD Defender with those stupid optional extra side box. I cannot imagine them being used, but it's part of the street cred package

LOL. It's been answered now, but the light is in the mirror itself, not the housing.

Still. Blindspot monitoring. You turn your head to look at the mirror and the little light catches your attention. On my car, it also beeps at me if I switch on my indicator into the lane where there is a vehicle.
 
Q1 : Blind Spot Detection : You only see it because you are obviously in their blind spot when you can spot it, otherwise it's off the rest of the time. In most cars if they turned the wheel and tried to change lanes without their indicator on it would beep at them and in more advanced setups even steer away.

As a motorcyclist it's been life changing, not even once have I been almost taken out by a car that has this technology.

Q2 : Line of sight isn't what it used to be, there are even cars without rear windows these days. Cameras everywhere make all the difference.
