Hi ppl

I need some help to get the GPRS connection going on my buddies PC. The connection dials and verifies username and password but stops with the message "registering computer on the network" and then terminates with Error 734 PPP link control protocol terminated.

When I use my phone (Nokia 6600) the connection authenticates.

The siemens Phone setup is as per Vodacom helpdesk and APN = internet and no IP address. The WAP on the phone works properly. The bluetooth connection also checks out with the modem working fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

You can try this, it might resolve your problem.

In Windows XP you goto the control panel select "phone & modem options" and select your bluetooth modem. In the advanced tab of your bluetooth modem properties you need to add the following to you "extra initialization strings"

+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet" (see end of post for alternatives)

If you are not using a bluetooth modem just add it to the generic modem installed by your phone software (eg if you are using a cable you will have the siemens modem - cant remember what they called it been a while since I used a Siemens)

You can also use the following commands from Hyperterm in windows or minicom from linux

AT+CGMI: Issue manufacturer ID code
AT+CGMM: Issue model ID code
AT+CGMR: Output the GSM telephone version
AT+CGSN: Output the serial number (IMEI)
AT+GSN: Output the serial number (IMEI)

This will also tell you if your pc is communicating with your phone correctly.

The string I gave at the top of the post is generic and should work, however if not you can use this method to try obtain you init string.

Alternatives: Ok so how do you get init strings from a siemens modem?

To find out the format of the CNMI type "AT+CNMI=?"

AT+CNMI=?
+CNMI: (0-1),(0-3),(0,2),(0-2),(1)

The init-string line in modem config must be within these parameters.
init-string = "AT+CNMI=1,2,0,0,1"

Also you may want to do other commands:
AT+CPIN?
AT+CSMS=?

I have already entered the Init string as per your last post. When I connect to the phone via Hyperterm how do I get to type the commands?

I appologise for my lack of knowledge but I was lucky to get my Nokia phone to connect the forst time without hassles!

Thanks for the help thus far!

Hi alchamy

Tnx for the help! We got the GPRS connection working by reconfiguring the 'phone according to the guide on vodacom4me. We used the Init String you suggested in you original GPRS post.

hi piranha786

I'm assuming that you are using Bluetooth or IR and that you have managed to connect the Nokia to the PC successfully?

The setup on the nokia 6600 is simple.
1) Go to Menu, Tools, Settings, Connection: You should now see 3 options: Access points, GPRS and Data Call.
2) CLick on Access points: If there is anything in there: delete it!
3) In this menu click on OPtion and create new access point.
4) Connection Name: internet.GPRS
Data Bearer: GPRS
Access point name: internet
User Name: none
Prompt pword: No
Password: "leave empty"
Authentication: Normal
Homepage: http://www.vodacom4me.co.za (only used for WAP)
Click Back
5) OK now you should have an access point called internet.GPRS. CLick on the joystick and then options and advanced options: Phone IP should be automatic, PNS 0.0.0.0 SNS 0.0.0.0, Proxy serv adrr: None and Proxy port number 0
6) CLick back and go to GPRS
7) GPRS connection: Use WHen Avialable, the 'phone will connect faster. Teh antenna on teh screen will be replaced with a G
8) scoll one down to access point and insert: internet
9) The data call menu is not used with GPRS
10) Go back to Main Menu and select Services
11) internet.GPRS should be at the top of the list. CLick the joystick and Yes at the prompt to connect to the internet. This will then connect you to WAP and test the GPRS setup. If this works the dial up should be simple.

Set up a new Dial up on your PC and leave all the settings on default. The modem selected should be Bluetooth or IR modem and the number *99#
Leave to Username and PW empty.

Let me know if you can't get it sorted.

damn just when U thought that I'm gonna get right my 6600 menu key dont respond anymore. Ok, it was long that it gave me troubles. the vodacare told me that they can fixed it with a softwate upgrade free of charge. will take a few minutes. 2day I went around (not to canal walk) they all tell me I have to wait b/n 2-7 days, I'll check tomorrow at Canal walk rather.

Any way I went back to my 7210 that was collecting dust. I just set up gprs and mms, everything on the phone works perfect, mms and internet, but it again gives me the PPP error. now I am getting fed up. I whould hade aborted my mission (getting gprs to work) but know I saw that the past of stellenbosch that I stay does not hav 3G yet. HELP< HELP HELP!!!

Telkom is eating me alive with R800 phonebills.

Hi piranha786

Have you tried calling 082 155 as per v3g's guidelines in the following thread:

[thread=18894]How to get 3G support[/thread]

at last I got it to work, yippie, what I am doing now is to first connect to the internet on my phone, then I connect it via IR to my pc. the speed is much more than I though. 115 kbps, double dailup. now I must just get my bundle added then telscum can go to hellkom. no I can use gprs so long till 3g is available freely and less expensive.

I am so glad I got to this site, otherwise I would never knew what I know Now, thx to all.

 IR, ouch, I have never had much success with sustained cellery [Nokia] IR <--> PC connections, IMO Bluetooth is much better than IR.

Good that you got it going though, BTW welcome to MyADSL :).

yeah I have a bt dongle but it seems that it dont want to work, so I bought me the ir adapter. I think iR is 4 mbps while bt = 723 kbps. although l.o.s not required by bt. thx for the welcome :)

Hi Piranha786,

The speed of 115kbps is the port speed. Do a speed test. Go here
http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page...aramURL=/pls/portal/docs/page/dsl/speed.shtml
and do the http one.

I'm also in Stellenbosch. If you can connect to the Papegaaiberg tower, that one is an EDGE tower, meaning it will give you faster GPRS speeds. But I gather you are not quite in the center of town from your previous post. What part of Stellenbosch are you in?

oh i forgot to say, the internet access I can only get on my 7210 not on my 6600, still say the same 734 error. maybe the phone is cursed
