Some say......
Hi all.

Looking to upgrade from my canon 18-55 kit lens. Been looking at the sigma 17-50 and 17-70, the 17-50 has become rather expensive recently though but i do prefer its constant f2.8. Would like to know if anyone has used both these lenses and if the 17-50 is really worth the extra money?

Thanks

Going from that 18-55 cannon lens to the 17-70 won't give you the performance jump you're probably looking for.

F2.8 is awesome.

Yeah been thinking this, mainly looking for better low light performance and sharpness....just sadly that 17-50 has gone up massively in last few months thanks to amazing rand

All Canon gear, from selected suppliers, is 10% off on Friday…

Go forth , not third or second and spend just over a thousand on the Canon Nifty Fifty aka Fantastic Plastic 50mm f1.8 as a prime lens. So you need to zoom with your feet but it's a great thing to have in your bag.

Without knowing what you like to take photo's of (more important to know than lens size!), I have this to say:

Zoom's are typically disappointing.
Go for a quality prime lens.

I second the 50mm recommendation (assuming you have a 1.6x sensor). The 1.8 is great value, I have a F1.8 and a F1.4 of that.
If you have a full frame, then the 85mm is better.

They are? I can't imaging life without my set of zooms.

Like a lot of photographers I started off with a 50mm f.1/8 - they're inexpensive and sharp but also really limiting. 80mm, the effective FL on a crop body, puts it in the telephoto category. Handy if you're shooting portraits, not so much if you're into landscapes.

Already have the canon 50mm f1.8(the older one) and a Tamron 70-300(newer version with IS). I use the 18-55 kit lens quite a bit though and its slow aperture(no IS doesn't help) is a bit limiting.

Decided to spend the extra cash and get the 17-50. However finding stock seems to be an issue, contacted four stores now and none have stock
