Hi.

Does anyone do signal testing.

I want to know that I will have reasonable* access to the Sentech Network before I sign the contract.

Please let me know asap!

Don't do it!!!!!! Run, run as fast as you can!!! And don't look back!!!

Footnote: There are no smilies, I am very serious about this. You will regret it.

Well again you are hearing a onesided opinion.
I got mywireless because it would give me a permanent connection.

With mywireless: Permanent connection and sure it has been slow a lot of the time, but it is better than no connection. The speeds are anyway better than a normal connection through the telephone line , even when they are slow, and the cost is actually less. (for the 128 package)

Before mywireless: Between my telephone lines being down and my service provider being down, my access to the internet was pretty sporadic, so mywireless is great as far as I am concerned.

If you want someone to help you, maybe it would be a good idea to tell us where you live

Hey Robone,

Until a week ago I was also doing the '24/7 very nice, even if speeds are slow' bit. Then I actually started to track my speeds - and the following is my personal opinion.

When to take Sentech: If you absolutely need 24/7 connection, thus you are at home during the day, and you need to have large amounts of data coming through. Sorry, let's change that to - not be capped as at recent speeds there are no large amounts of data coming through. Just be prepared that some days it will be so slow that pages will time out.

If you have ISDN and Callmore and only use your connection after hours, keep it. Especially if it is a 128K ISDN connection. Your ISDN speeds will be superior (even to the 256k service).

If you have ADSL, rather get a second account if you find you are hitting the cap. At least you will get throughput. Yes, I know this is sacrilege, but after speaking to an ADSL user (and he sparked my speed research) it seems to be a logical option.

Dial-up connection (analog, not ISDN). Difficult one this - if you are in a bad area, then yes, MyWireless may be the way to go. If not continue (R7 callmore) or consider ISDN.

I used to run on R7 callmore and ISDN (128k). After seven I was connected continuously until seven the next morning, and continually over the weekend. Total telephone bill was between R1000 and R1200 (this includes all costs, including line rental, Callmore etc). It has now dropped to about R500, so with the myWireless charge works out to be about the same.

This is personal experience - it may very well vary for other people. But if you are expecting similar speeds / throughput to an ISDN connection chances are extremely good you ain't gonna get it.

Come on!!!! You can't compare a dial up 56k to a mywireless 128k.

The 128 is cheaper, speed has never been below 6kbs but is usually around 12kbs compared to the best (4,5kbs) I have got on the dialup.

Plus on the 128 mywireless connection I have a mailserver running, a web server and I can leave all software I need running permanently.

Yes agreed Mywireless is a good option for 7/24 compared to dialup, BUT at the speeds that people are getting it is not BROADBAND. Sentech are guilty of false advertising and misrepresentation

Broadband Definition: A transmission facility having a bandwidth sufficient to carry multiple voice, video or data channels simultaneously. Each channel occupies (is modulated to) a different frequency bandwidth on the transmission medium and is demodulated to its original frequency at the receiving end.

I agree with you. Fat chance I have of getting voice, video and still download my music. But then I would also have to smoke grass if I expected a speed of 128kbs to manage all that. So, what are they selling....a service.

And to the stupid people out there broadband has a nice ring to it, but then for those of us on this site, who know a little bit about computers etc, we shouldn't be so stupid to have expected 128 or even 512kbs to carry a true broadband service.

Or are we smoking something else?

The accepted definition of Broadband in the USA is +1 Meg.
In SA, there is debate… but most accept +512K as broadband.
As MyWireless does not provide +512K, it can be reasoned that Sentech does not sell broadband.
So yes, Sentech is selling an overhyped product. (Hyped marketing ...period!)
But.... for those of us who have been exposed to the IT industry for years,
this is the reality! This is a wake up call!
MyWireless is a 24/7 service, providing wireless speeds (i.e. Delayed Ping Times) , usually well in excess of dial-up.
That’s it…period!
If you believed otherwise.... I have to agree with Robone... what ya smoking!

Guys, I am comparing the performance that I am getting (256k mywireless) with the performance that I was getting on a 128K ISDN line (please read my note again). And the ISDN performance was (a) consistent, and (b) in the range of 12k - 16k. My 256k wireless performance sits between under 1k and up to 14k - the latter when I am lucky. I have once (yes - once) seen a 256k type of speed (in the 25k+ range).

I never raised ping times, I am not interested in online gaming. I also run a web server and CVS server off mywireless (as I did on my ISDN connection - to the extent that we even did demo's for clients). I knew at the start that online gaming is a no-no, but I wanted an always-on connection that provided me with a bit more bandwidth than what I had. What I expected was speeds (throughput) that would be the same (and hopefully better) as my ISDN connection - NOT sub-56k or less speeds, which is what I am getting.

Thus far the only advantage - for me - that MyWireless has is the 24/7 one (which does not mean much when one has a sub-1k connection as not much can be done), in other aspects it is far inferior to a 128K ISDN connection. This is my opinion as these are the speeds that I experience. You see Robone, what upsets me in this is the fact that I know there are 128K MyWireless users out there that get 75%+ of their theoretical speed (as you are). Which is why I get seriously peeved when I battle to reach 10k on a consistent basis. If you can get your bandwidth, why can't I? We both are paying for it. And that is why I fight to get Sentech to address the problem.

Ask yourself this - if you on your 128K connection consistently (the key word here - consistently) got a throughput of 2k, and the last couple of of days sub-1k speeds, what would your reaction be?

Robone, I think passif has hit the nail on the head. Just wait until you consistently receive 1kb/s for 2 weeks. You will be grumpy too. The fact is, that there is no consistency in the service, and there is no way of predicting who will be affected next.

The fact is, that taking MyWireless as a NEW service right now, is RISKY. So unless you're inclined to that sort of thing, then don't do it. If you ABSOLUTELY MUST, then consider the unbundled offering, with a smaller contract period.

REDUCE the risk.

Actually I agree with both of you. If I had bad service, I would be bitching and moaning. Maybe I am just lucky or my computer is well tuned[:D].

I have had bad days, but the service has never been that bad for me to think I would not want to be connected with mywireless, whereas, when i was connected via good old telephone line, how I wished for another SP.
