Signing the OTP.

I guess given the high probability of someone else buying the car, the effort of chasing an OTP is not worth it.

I guess if you ordered a pink car with lime stripes down the middle it may become a different matter

Most definitely!! Actually if you do order a specific colour and specification, the whole OTP story becomes a different ballgame, as you are asking the dealer to fork out the money for that particular car that may not be readily available.

As for Pink cars, we had a batch of 21 Metallic Pink Citigolfs made up for us at Sakers back in 1990 - very popular with the girls and the occasional gayboi! ;)

Signing means you are going to buy the vehicle and as stated on the offer to purchase (OTP), you cannot cancel the deal once you have signed. The only way to get out of an OTP is if you cannot get finance for the car. Rather pay a deposit, they cannot refuse the deposit and must keep the car because you paid the deposit. If you do go ahead with the deal, the deposit will be used towards the deposit you put down on the car.

My wife has been working in the motor industry for some years and my father in law has been selling mercs for the last ten years and that is how they have been doing things since I met my wife a number of years a go.

What happens with the deposit if you decide not to take the car?

Depending on the dealer the deposit will be returned. I had a car prepped and ready to be delivered just before Christmas and phoned the client to confirm delivery (yes he had signed the OTP and got the bank involved in finance) and he said that he had changed his mind.

He did get his deposit back.

Crazy thing with this guy is that he phoned me again this Saturday and asked if we could start the whole thing all over again, as he's decided to take the car.

Most dealers would have told him to "Have a nice day", but we will accept his new deal if he finally comes to his senses and take the car!

You must get a lot of guys that just change their minds...

Looking for a Golf 4 in the Pretoria area, think you could help?
Must be as standard as possible.

Do you mean me personally?

If so, the answer is that we don't get many people who mess us around the way this one has.

Some customers can be total pains, but you have to grin and bear it!

No Golf 4 trade ins that I can recall, though we should be getting a very sweet looking Polo GTi in within the next week.

Yes I presume he is one that went to far.

Okay thanx.

What I will suggest is get full disclosure from the chap regarding what they are planning to charge for registration, valets and whatnot. What one should pay is debatable, but I have worked with a number of people who would sneak a couple of grand in once you've already agreed on a price.

I've seen deliveries turn into rather sour affairs very rapidly because these costs (well, 'costs'... in some instances) were not disclosed beforehand.

Having been burnt more than once by dealers - rule of thumb is to NOT trust anything they say. Don't sign anything that is not final... and they are extremely sneaky with their costs (some charge as much as R3500 for registration - which takes you 30min to do yourself)

It is so sad that one or two rotten apples can give the entire industry a bad name.

ALL of my costs are discussed prior to delivery, and Our S&D (2250) charge covers a tank of fuel(approx 475), a set of imported carpet mats ( R800), paying for the licence (5 - 600) and registration as well as buying and fitting (300) the number plates.

Agreed, anyone charging over 3k for S&R is taking a chance.

At present I am dealing with a customer who was burnt on his previous deal (Opel Astra), and because of the bad Opel deal, this guy is now transferring all of his suspicion on to me.

He received a brilliant discount where he did some major negotiating with our DP, and then, after settling on the price, wanted to know what was wrong with the car if we were willing to sell it to him at such a good price!!

Some times you cannot win! :(
