signing up for XBOX live-problems

I recently purchased ( 3rd Dec ) a 360 Elite. while checking out www.xbox.com I signed up for xbox LIVE (using regular my LIVE ID), seeming I was going to use it on my Xbox. got the Xbox all hooked up to the net, choose to sign up/sign in to LIVE and was told that the LIVE ID ( the one I signed up with and use as my primary email addy and for messenger etc) is associated to another Gamertag and that I must use another Live account to register/sign in.???
err, this is what I find very confusing, surely if I register on the web using my LIVE account and create a gamertag I should be able to use that same account to sign into XBOX live on my Xbox?
it seems crazy that you have to register ON your xbox when MS offer you the option to create an account on the web...that wont bloody work on your xbox because the gamertag is already associated to it?
I dont really want to create another LIVE account just to sign in on the XBOX. I dont give a toss about the gamer tag, I can create another one. I dont have any points on it etc.
I've mailed MS my woes......anybody else had a similar experience?
I also tried recovering my gamertag on the XBOX, managed to sign in using my gamertag +live ID and immediately after accepting the terms and conditions i get 80153003 as an error code.....this is very annoying.
 
im gonna buy elite sunday, bit paranoid but is your elite a jasper, ie 12.1amp, cos im gonna make them open it to check.
 
I gave up and created another live account...happy xboxing! now when does SA get xbox live? ( using a uk addy now, so I can get the content)
 
The really sucky thing is all those cool features dangled infront of our faces, but we can't use most of em.

"This content is not available in your location."

It is getting to me.
