Silicon Power Portable Hard Drives

Has anyone heard of Silicon Power portable hard drives? How are their products? I think they also do SSD, I wonder if anyone's tested their products before? Heard from my friend in Japan that their products are decent with reasonable pricing.
 
According to a very knowledgable fellow forumite it's got a Seagate/Samsung drive inside.

I think Corex is/was the local distributor.

I bought my GF a Silicon Power Diamond D03 2.5" External Hard Drive (1TB)(USB 3.0) about a year ago. Still going strong... (the drive and the relationship :D).

Got it @ cost when I was still in my previous job at an IT reseller. Think I paid something like R641 incl. VAT for it. :cool:

Mine's got the standard 3 year warranty - just double check with the place you intend to purchase from.

I've also got two 16GB flash drives. Both still work, about 2-3 years old. Limited lifetime warranty on them IIRC.
 
I think Corex no longer carries Silicon Power products..but I'm glad to hear your relationship with your girl is going strong!

From what you have mentioned, their products should be pretty reliable. I had a look at their website and was actually surprised by the range of products they offer. Will be looking around to see where I can find a local distributor of their products.

I know Corex dropped Silicon Power a while back (got the external drive in a clearance sale), but just before I left my old job, one of Corex's sales/product managers told me they were going to give them another shot. Apparently, there were issues in dealing with Silicon Power HQ (probably support/stock availability) the first time round, which were addressed satisfactorily to give them another chance.

Whether this actually happened, I don't know.

You can also try Transcend products (distributed by Rectron) - should be a lot easier to source. I believe their external hdds also have 3 year warranties and their flash drives should also have limited lifetime warranties. Transcend have some nice rugged external hdds, but whether the rugged enclosure will actually protect your hdd better than a normal plastic casing, is open for debate.
 
I actually saw this video of Silicon Power's A80 which fascinated me on the endurance of the external hard drive. I travel quite often and things often get knocked around a bit so will most probably look for a rugged external hard drive. Have you had experience with this model before?

I've sent an email to Silicon Power, hopefully they will be able to get back to me on where to get their products. I want to compare their prices with Transcend, then hopefully I will be able to make a decision on which product to go with.

I really think you are going to struggle to get the A80 from within SA.

You might also want to look at ADATA's rugged range. I think Esquire and Frontosa are distributors. Here's one.

I like to read user reviews, so as to make an informed decision upon buying. Newegg and Amazon are useful in this regard. It seems quite a few people have issues regarding the ADATA HD710's cable connection.

A different way to go would be to get a rugged case for your external.

I once asked a sales manager at Frontosa why they didn't do the WD Nomad rugged case.

Whether by coincidence or through me asking, a month or two later, they had them. They should still sell them - Pinnacle Africa as well.

It fits Western Digital Passport drives. I have a 1TB and a 2TB. The 2TB is a bit thicker, but the case still manages to close - only just! I once tried a friend's cheaper WD Elements 1TB and it also fit (not as thick), even though WD doesn't mention its product code as being compatible with it. I once saw them in a Dion Wired store - apparently they still sell them.

I can vouch for the WD Nomad + Passport. I once accidentally dropped mine while opening a door - it worked perfectly fine after being dropped from a door handle height.

Just to note: any hdd will be prone to fail taking a knock while powered on.
 
I've just received a reply from Silicon Power, they told me that they are now working with James Ralph Pty (Ltd) whom is also the distributor for Casio. I'll contact them to see if they stock the A80.

Getting a separate rugged case seems to be more of a mission as I'm worried I may have to send both parts back if they both become faulty which then would be time consuming.

They exhibited at the recent Photo & Film Expo at the dome and showcased their A80 portable HDD - by parking a Ferrari 360 on the drive to show how tough it is. It's rated for a 3m drop test and 1m water proof test.
They do both internal and external Solid State Drives with Read/Write speeds of over 500MB/s.
 
I bought one last year from MitaByte, but after falling several times became completely unusable. If you can keep from dropping it, it will work just fine.
