Silly Q about Word docs

I have Word 2003 on my laptop. If someone e-mails me a Word doc and I received it in an unreadable format called .docx, does that mean that the other person drafted the doc using Word 2007 and the two are incompatible?

Or what other reasons are there for receiving .doxc documents which cannot be read/opened?

Yes it does, docx is an extended .doc format.

Install the Office 2007 compatibility patch.

Not really. The X stands for XML not extended. Its very different to .doc.
