silly question

I hope I am posting this silly question in the correct category.
If I register a domain name with an isp.. who owns the rights to that domain name? In other words, if they register the domain name on my behalf can I decide to change my hosting to a different company without major hassles. I know that the domain name registration and hosting are different things but many companies offer better deals on hosting if you get them to register your domain name though them. I appreciate your responses!
If there are any particularly good deals around for entry level hosting for a wordpress site.. I'd also be interested.

If the ISP registers the name on your behalf, they have to BY LAW put you as the registrant of the domain. Works the same for .co.za and .com, even though most ISP's I've seen registers the .co.za names in their own name which would make a dispute very difficult.

There's a couple of guys who'd love to host you, try www.effectivehosting.co.za

He won't bull**** you

You might also be interested in www.webhostza.com - we are currently giving away free hosting accounts - send me a PM if you are interested.

If you register top level domains, don't go through hosting companies, rather register your own account with Namecheap.com. You get full control over your domain names, plus all changes you make, such as forwarding, dns, etc. is totally free. We do this for all our clients.

Also remember, you get what you pay for... ;)

What he means is looking at companies such as Hostgator.com, Godaddy.com, etc. These are the world's largest hosting providers, hosting the majority of the world's websites. They have hosting packages where you pay less than R30 per month.

You never get any problems with these companies at all. In fact, many people hosted with them for years without any one single problem. They are making hosting affordable, even for South Africans.

Most good and honest companies will transfer the domain without a problem, find out before if a charge will be incurred for doing so. With co.za you should have your details on the whois record but I guess that would be a preference!

Let me "fix" that for you.

Any n00b who hears he "has to have" a website and that it's the "in thing" to do and to make money he "needs" one... yes.

But as I'm currently hosting with hostgator, I can tell you now that it's not the best option at all if you actually know WTF you're doing. The amount of "401" or "404"'s I get on legitimate site links on my sites (Google reports them with their bot crawls) only indicates to me that their shared services can't handle the 9 websites I have hosted there and the bots crawling them...

However, hostgator does have excellent support, and the several times in the past 6 months I did have a problem with them, they sorted it out quite quickly and/or contacted me back as promised and within a very reasonable time. It's not for everyone, but if you want to start out on a pissy-server and don't require any kind of guarantee in uptime, go for it... but they do have good support to boot so it's a crap shoot.

I won't host with godaddy to save my life.

I don't go to CTFM for the steak, I got there for the fish. I don't go to a steakhouse for a pizza, I go to a Pizza place... so I won't buy hosting off a registrar, or an ISP for that matter. Because their core business and focus isn't hosting at all, it's selling you internet connectivity or selling you a domain name. Same reason why I won't host my email with my ISP either... :p
