Hi,

Sorry i should have said, silly questionS from a story... :) in my subject

I have noticed that my steering shakes a little bit when slowing down. I was told that the brake discs have a certain life time. I know my brake pads are more or less 2 years old and if i see , it looks like they are half way worn.
I am no expert but I do know what the meat on the pad looks like.

For a while maybe say 6 months i have noticed that my car has a stop-go stop-go feeling when i apply the brakes. Al most like a bicycle ride with your brakes dont catch the rim lekker.
When i release i dont feel it , i just feel smooth sailing.

I just had my head taken in to engineering for skimming and repairs, im sure when i collected my car it felt like normal, and i didnt notice any thing weird about the braking. I brake gradually and lightly though mostly.
This morning in joburg it was bliksem cold like really icey and i have noticed on the freeway when braking the steering had more a a shudder now , so i am wondering if now my discs are worse-worse ? can the cold weather do anything like have more of an affect on the metal to assist in further warping?

My discs are about 8 years old now, they dont feel groovy and i dont seem to have that deep lip on the edge like everybody talks about. From reason and conversation the guys told me that your discs warp overtime regardless of whether u drive like a granny or not.

I have in the last 3 weeks done wheel alignment and balancing, not sure if this is worth mentioning.

Can repair on the head gasket and taking the head to the engineers have an impact or influence / affect on the shudder story?

Can somebody please help me here to understand the likeliness of my car shudder?

Thanks guys

S'pose the quick and cheaper option to try first is to apply some copper lube to the calipers and behind the master cylinder.

If the calipers are working right and the pads are wearing without any scoring - next option may be to see if you can the discs skimmed.

Change brake fluid - maybe?

After that it may become a bit more expensive.

Not a motor mechanic me

Brake Fluid is fine. Cylinder are fine also. Only my booster is on its way.
I am talking about shudder here and the Discs are a good 8 years old.
Buying news discs would be the same cost as skimming them so i would rather do that, if it were that.

I dont see the head of the car has to do with a strut and the braking system ffs.
after a flux capacitor answer, yes.

So the question is do i need a new flux capacitor or a set of Brake Discs?

Ignore the nonsense on the above posts from Skeptic, the shudder when you brake has nothing to do with the skimmed head and the repairs. uneven disks do that, unbalanced wheels, driveshafts etc, since you did alignment and balancing my guess would be the disks, and yes the cold weather might have an effect.

You can trust this guys advise. He was named after a popular bakkie. He knows.

If it were me personally - I would get the discs skimmed.

Yup sounds to me like a warped disc. Question, is the shudder faster or more intense when braking at a higher speed than at a lower speed?

It seemed more scary when at a high speed. I will check for you tonight...
I mean i am not used to shudder in general so i dont know what amount is good or not.

I do remember long ago though on a declined freeway i had to take an exit, as well as brake pretty heavy and the car didnt feel lekker when doing so.... i didnt however feel a shudder/steering shake.

I dont hear metal or knocking and 5h1t

There should be no shudder.

It is exactly as you mentioned regarding a bicycle brake block catching on a bent rim. It's the same concept, which is why it feels like that, if it is a warped disc. Is there any shudder when free wheeling or accelerating? Is it any different when the wheels are turned vs when they're straight?

No shudder when free wheeling.....
I have noticed a very very mild / slight shake but i am talking like 5mm movement in the wheel maybe and i dont always really notce it so meaning it is not big of a movement, when i am driving very very slow say like 40km or so... BUT i was thinking that can be because of a rim which has a dent or knock , this was brought to my attention by Mintys in Bedford but years on years at Hi-Q or Motoquip they have never mentioned this to me....so not sure if they have a different means of doing balancing or alignment
A guy i work with told me if you have a funny rim it can cause this.... im talking like really minute.

but no , i dont feel any stop-go or shake when free wheeling... iil double check again BUT it is not like the experience i had when i noticed this mornng...

Its co-incidence because i really dont remember this shaking feeling before this COLD CHILL day which is the day just after i collected my car from having the head gasket repair done, its just f annoying because ive looked after my car as much as i can and seen to things when i can and now it seems like im having kuk luck

I was just surprised that your discs can eventually warp over time even if you dont brake hard in general.

If i get new discs which brand should i get , i have already bought new pads ATE from Gold Wagen.

I couldn't advise you on what discs to get, you haven't mentioned what car it is. However, I'm assuming it's a VW, probably a golf in which case Goldwagen would be ideal for you. If it's a Citi Golf, the standard discs or solid (not vented or anything) so they do get hot quickly and fade easily if you do any form of heavy driving and braking. Might be worth the money to get slightly better ones, but that's entirely up to you.

Opel Corsa B 1999 Sedan

Cool. If Goldwagen have your discs, just get them from there.

Thanks for the help everybody.

ill be sure to meet up with the doc on the future about the 10 gigawatts for the flux capacitor
