I'm using the Telkom Mega105WR router to allow my laptop and PC to connect to the internet but is it possible to use this router to also create a local file sharing network between my laptop and PC?

I'm not sure I follow...but if you just mean a normal windows network then that should be fairly easy. They are already connected and the links are working so they should be able to access each other. The procedure should be identical to a wired network from here on.

But you'd have to tell us what operating systems they are running if you want detailed instructions...

Your answer is in your question - you have a router. Put both computers in the same workgroup, allow a few shared files, then go see who's on your network...

Ok sorry I'm not good with networking, I tried to create a workgroup on Vista and access it from my Mac but to test if my Mac could detect my PC I pinged the IP of the Vista PC but got a timeout so suspected that the Telkom router does not allow this but the router's address pinged successfully.

Comms between MAC & PC are a bit more complicated than that. Perhaps other people can be of help.

But standard file sharing between two PCs with a router shouldnt be a problem

You need to enable file sharing in Vista in the networks section. Also you'll need to create exceptions in the firewall or disable it all together.

Thanks, so I'll create a workgroup in Vista share the folders I want... but not sure how to configure the router(telkom mega) firewall.

If I remember correctly the telkom routers actually firewall between the wireless and the switch ports.

You shouldn't need to change anything on the router if everything is connected to it.

^^ He's implying the vista firewall.

The telkom router doesnt seperate wireless and wired lan connections

Only other thing u need to note. If you connect from a nonvista pc you need to allow Guest Access to the vista pc shares. Also for mac/windows sharing from windows to mac a specific network protocol needs to be loaded on the Mac. Last did this about a year ago so memory is hazy in that area ;)

I've had success with getting Vista to access my Mac but getting my Mac to access Vista still needs to be sorted. Zone Alarm firewall prevented my mac to ping Vista once I realized this things started making more sense :)
Edit:
Once I reconfigured ZoneAlarm and could ping my PC I followed this tutorial and I'm now sorted...

Now I'll attempt linux.

If you connect from a nonvista pc you need to allow Guest Access to the vista pc shares.

It's under the individual shares' security settings.

Add user

Guests

Full/read only access

Apply

And should be going :)

Thanks guys, got it sorted on kubuntu as well now.

What confused me was that zonealarm was blocking access to my Vista share so I suspected the router, thought the telkom router only allowed internet connections not file sharing. :)

This router is rather slow or could my configuration be wrong? the telkom router claims to be a 10/100 base-t so I presume that's half duplex? 10 receive/ 100 send?
