So, I want to take a couple of silver krugerrand coins overseas.

SARS has the following info on their departure info:

What are the restrictions on Kruger Rand coins?

  1. South African residents may not export any Kruger Rand coins from South Africa without the prior approval of SARB.
Does anyone have experience with getting approval? Or whether this even applies to the silver Krugerrands? Seems like a hassle for something that cost R300...

AFAIK its just for the gold coins, they do not have a face value and is vat free.
The silver coins on the other hand has a face value of R1. Chat to your auditor, but seeing its a R1 legal tender coin, you can handle it like a R1 coin.

Even if it's gold, they don't check or care

When they try to place you under arrest at the airport just be the fastest hamster in the room.

This for a gift or what?

Not worth using silver KR to move value because they only worth R500 a coin.
Yeah, it's not me trying to smuggle out R5k surreptitiously, I just like the coins. And there are some family members overseas.

My query is currently bouncing around the Reserve Bank. They reallocated it to the "Currency Management Department" and have now reallocated it to the "Financial Markets Department".
