Yes, yes, I am technically challenged :D

Are SMS messages stored on the phone or on the SIM?

Got a Nokia N85. Inserted my current SIMcard into the phone, but cannot find my old SMS messages (specially saved because they are of value). I can also not find them on the previous phone that I used.

Should there be some transfer process??

I swear, if you laugh ...........

I recently bought a sim card reader and I can see on some 2G cards they can store upto 25 sms. So your sim card can store sms, but I guess it all depends on your phone where they decided to store the sms, phone memory or sim.

I know Sony Ericsson phone used to delete all previous sms once a new sim was inserted to the phone, to protect privacy.

Good question. On an old phone of mine they disappear when I put another SIM in. On my newer (but not latest) model, they stay until I delete them, so they must be on the phone.

Newer phones store on the phone as Phone > Sim capacity

As previous poster said some phones delete the sim message when a new sim card is inserted. Stupid of the manufactures if you ask me, it should at least give you a warning...
