You can go to just about any store and buy a SIM card for 50cents.
You can migrate from pre paid to contract, on the same network, without changing the SIM card.

On pre paid you can do a SIM swap by buying a new SIM card for 50cents and doing the swap over then phone.
On contract you have to go to a store to do a SIM swap, on top of that you can only use a SIM card supplied by the store at a cost of R70 or more. You can not do a SIM swap, on a contract, using a 50cent SIM card.
The question is why would you get charged 140 times more for the same thing (other than the telco fleecing those who can pay)? It is not like the SIM is anything different. It is just a chip, with a unique number, that identifies your device on the network. It doesn't make the coffee or feed the dog. What is going to happen when mobile devices come with built in SIM cards? The telco's are going to have a field day with that one.
