So I went to Cellucity today to get a sim card so I could take advantage of the 20gb summer special and was shocked to see that while they charge R10 for a normal SIM they wanted R110 for a micro sim - presumably the same kind of micro sim 8TA just gives away.

Is this price [gouging] normal across all of Vodacom's partners or just Cellucity?

I went hunting for a microSIM a few weeks ago.

Vodacom wanted me to buy a regular SIM, come back in a few hours and do a SIM swap. (Total was something like R50).

CellC wanted to charge me more than R100 (I forget the exact price -- it was something like R120 or R130) for a microSIM.

MTN sold me a microSIM for R1.

I didn't check with 8ta.

I guess they figure they can charge an exorbitant amount for a microSIM because the majority of people buying them are iDevice owners therefore they can afford it (this is me guessing at their twisted logic, not my opinion ;) ).

My brother paid R130 for his Micro Sim card from Cell C for his iPhone 4.

Some stores have a SIM cutter, so rather buy a normal starter pack (95c Cell C) and cut the SIM card.

Nobody is going to see the card once it's in the device anyway.

This store didn't - most likely so they can push the overpriced vodacom sims.

A nice thing about the pre-cut one is you can recycle the cutaway to use the micro sim in other devices.

Hi Bwana

Which store did you goto... so we can sort them out!

The prices should be as follows:

1. Prepaid Sim - R10
2. Sim swap card R63.99
3. New Contract sim - R105

these prices should be standard across the board.

cheers
Chris

Cut a regular SIM with scissors. I did one and it works in my iPad

Walmer Park. Can you confirm the price of the micro sim?

As I mentioned above, I would have preferred the micro sim so I can reuse the cutaway when I use the SIM in other devices.

Geez, 99c for a Micro SIM card, just goes to show how much they rip you off at the stores!!

PM me you details, I will get Andrea the store manageress to sort you out
Thanks. :)

99 cents on the Vodacom Online shop. But then I suppose they have delivery charges, and it will take a couple of days to get it.

You can say that again. R0.99 for the sim - R130 for the delivery! :wtf:

Ouch, lots of profiteering it seems, and I have an iPhone 4S pre-ordered. Looking forward to the new phone, but I hope I don't get gouged for a Micro-SIM ...

Yeah even IC. The cost price I was surprised they were R0.99c, and the selling price was R110. How huge of a mark-up.

buy a normal sim and a cutter with the adaptor to fit in normal phones once its cut. still works out much cheaper

Paid R69 for micro sim yesterday. Shop told me its a bargain because they should actually charge R110 ??

Why the wide price discrepancy, with SIM cards, in the past 3 months, I have gotten 2x SIMS for FREE, paid 99 cents for 3 others, and a R110.00 for one.

So it seems it is up to the shop/consultants how much you get "ripped" for, maybe they are desparate to make target ...
