Howzit guys. Maybe one of you guys can give some input. I now have Win XP running on VBox on my Ubuntu host. I installed it cause I want to play Sim City 3000.

All went well...struggled a bit to get the resolution right...could not get my nvidia driver to install either...finally found a add on that I had to do and that sorted it out. But now, when I run the game, I can hear the CD Rom spinning up and the little light flashes....but it simply wont get past the "Maxis" splash screen. It just hangs there. :crying:

I really miss that game and really want to play it again...but I just cant seem to get it to work. Any ideas???????

I ran simcity 3000 in wine without any major hassles. It was about 18 months ago, so I'm a bit hazy. I can give it a go again if you need help?

Uhm, just to double check, you did install the Nvidia on the Ubuntu [Desktop] host, right?

And, you did install the vbox additions in the guest, right? http://dlc.sun.com.edgesuite.net/virtualbox/4.0.4/VBoxGuestAdditions_4.0.4.iso (Doesn't sound like it, as if it's installed, resolutions resizing is automatic)

Also, make sure the 2D and 3D Acceleration options are set in VirtualBox [Host] options.

FYI Check wine hq if Wine is supported for that game, it's an old game, i'm 100% there is a flavour of wine that will run it smoothly.

That would be great. I have tried installing it in wine...but could not get it to even install. I am a noob when it comes to wine. If it does not install as it is, then I am stuck. I can only tweak nipples....not wine :D

Yip...Nvidia is installed on the Ubuntu host....tried installing it on Vbox...but did not want to work. I then did some googling and found out I had to install Vbox additions....that sorted out my resolution probs pronto. I am not sure if 2D and 3D is enabled. I will have to check that when I get home tonight. IIRC, it was enabled, but I disabled it to see if it sorted out the problem...but no luck. Will double check it tonight.

Did you install the game or are you trying to run it off the cd?

Maybe try and copy the cd contents to your XP drive or create an ISO of the cd and mount that in VB.

I installed the game on in XP....but you must have the CD inserted for it to work. Perhaps if I copy the contents to my HDD and install from there it might work...is that what you saying mr. ponder wonder??? mmmmm me thinks me shall give that a try also.

I'm just thinking maybe the copy protection does not work so well via VB as it has to access the drive on the host. Make an ISO image of the drive and try and mount it in XP with Gizmo as well. You never know. If it was me I would just find a patch/crack for it.

Simcity 3K
Protection: SecuROM R4 [SC3K] / SafeDisc [SC3KU]

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4382

Try enabling Passthrough mode on the CD-drive in the VBox settings. SecuROM relies on some subchannel data it likely can't read through the Virtual Drive(r)

That or crack the sucker, you bought it,DRM shouldn't prevent you from playing it

Thanks meneer. So should I unstall the game, and then reinstall it from the image? Will that then make the game look for the image when I run it instead of the Cd in the CD Rom?

mmmm right...so tried creating the image .iso file with Brasero last night...but it did not want to. It copied about 396kb and then it just got stuck. Could this be the copy protection again? I will try and just copy the files into a folder, move it to the Windoze virtual drive and try running the setup file from there. Do you boys think that might work?

Should I perhaps wipe the hard drive and install windows first, then Ubuntu after that to simply create a dual boot laptop? I have never done that before though so just scared something might go horribly wrong. How easy is it to do??? I have never resized partitions and fixed boot loader thingy magiggies! But I am getting rather desperate. I really miss building my cities to full blown metropolis and then hitting it with a earthquacke and watching the little peeps running for their lives like little ants. Eish....does that make me a Sim Sadist! tehehehehe.

Heh, unfortunately I have no constructive advice to give that hasn't been given already.

I usually had "disasters" turned off, unless the citizens complained too much about taxes, or pollution, or the price of tea in China, then I would let loose. I remember once they were complaining about pollution, then godzilla or some large lizard came along and destroyed a large chunk of industrial area, that made me lol. :D
