SIM shopping shootout

We visited a mall in Centurion which hosted outlets from Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom Mobile and tested the speed at which these stores were able to sell us a new prepaid SIM.
 
Checkers... same amount of time for any SIM. And oddly enough the CellC sims are cheaper there.

I bought a Telkom SIM at PEP , they are 99c. I gave them a one rand coin and they gave me 10c back. Why they just not make it R1 or 90c :)

Why they don't just give them out for free I don't know, since they get paid for the now mandatory Rica anyway. Reminds me of when you purchased a phone you also had to purchase a SIM at the inflated cost of R100.
 
Guys do laying two different fibre backbone make any sense like improve economy of that particular neighborhood? I ask because in my town this is the case firstly Liquid Telecom roll out "metro network" which basically connect CBD's to FTTB then MTN roll out Fibre To The base station but now Vodacom is trenching next to MTN route to lay their own Fibre
I know in most cases reason might be if one line is experiencing technical issue the other one will be used as quick backup but this route is backbone infrastructure why they didn't just lay fibre in one duct?
My town is surrounded by villages is not likely that we will get FTTH, the only best thing we might get is 5G but I thought MTN route was good enough

Because our networks don't cooperate in that way.
