I wrote my first program on the Spectrum.

10 goto 20
20 goto 10

Nothing beat waiting 5 minutes for your program to load, except when it failed because the tape was wound too tightly and you first had to use a pen to unwind/rewind the tape a bit.

Good old days...

Never had a Spectrum (my best friend had one though). I had a Commodore 64 with a tape drive and boy, does seeing the BASIC bring back memories :)

Ahh good old Spectrum. Brings back days of making copies. 2 cassette recorders , one playing and one recording next to each other.
Copy ruined when dogs barked! :D

As friends you never bought the same games. Each will buy different game and the "backups" will be made. Worst was when the tape was swallowed by the dirty head rollers.

I made the mistake of opening up my Speccy and somehow frying a bit of the keyboard controller somewhere, so pressing the keys did nothing.
After that I had to use a piece of cable, look up the key positions and create a manual circuit to simulate pressing each key to type in the LOAD "" command.

Luckily after that I still had the joystick that I could play most games with.

The keyboard layout is mapped according to a ZX Spectrum layout so an image of that keyboard will help find keys like "', otherwise with a bit of experimentation it's fairly easy to find most keys. Overall it all works pretty well (including Spectrum basic)

Btw good to hear you got your joystick to work.

I still have my Spectrum. Some days I consider getting it fired up, then I remember what a headache the blasted thing really was :D

Hah yeah, it was just a basic grid layout for most keys. But I was just a teen at the time, so I felt pretty impressed with myself ;)
