I've got a large window that I need installed at my home. The hole for the window is as follows:
  • 12m by 3m
  • West facing
  • Second floor
In the afternoon, the sun absolutely bakes into it. I'm busy getting quotes for the window and I've been presented with three options:
  • Single glazed @ 1x cost
  • Solarvue @ ~1.5x cost
  • Double glazed @ ~1.8x cost

I have concerns about furniture/humans getting hot/sun burnt while sitting in the area. The whole goal of the window is to be a "picture" window. This extends into the evenings where I would like stars/planets/moon clearly visible etc so the ability to see out at night is critical.

Will speak with the architect and glass company tomorrow but aside from their "professional" opinions I would like to hear personal experiences with the products and pros/cons etc before pulling the trigger on a kidneys worth of glass.

Depends on how big a single pane of the glass panel will be. Also just triple check the glass is actually double glazed and not just safety glass. I have large 2.5m x 2m wide seamless panels of safety glass... clearly previous owner was a cheapy as the laminate has bubbled at the edges, one panel has about a 15cm x 40cm long separation in. To change that glass PG was around R7k per pane many years ago, but again that is just safety glass. That glass must weigh 200kg or something horrific! Try pick up a shower pane glass door and then you'll understand glass weight!

Just get double glazed with a guarantee, that glass has an air gap or gas inside, temp is perfect and noise is zero.

Maybe go look at them in the factory.
