I have a single LNB dish installation with a SD PVR decoder. Is it possible to use the PVR with such a dish installation? What are the pitfalls? Is it perhaps possible to use some kind of converter box inside the home to make this possible? What functionality of the PVR will be lost?

you will only get 1 viewing chanel, wont be able to record and wont be able to use the EPG

Not sure on the SD PVR, got my HD PVR a few days back and needed 2 LNB cables from Dish, one for viewing, once for recording.

The Dish also needed to be upgraded from a single LNB to dual LNB.

If you want dual-view you need a quad LNB.

There's also a converter box you need, which you can buy from the place you got the PVR, or any place where you buy DSTV Stuff (Game, Makro etc)

Easiest is the Multichoice website, they explain everything here: http://care.dstv.com/main.aspx?ID=1723

There's also a setup guide here, http://care.dstv.com/resourceLib/user_manuals/Install_&_Connect_your_SD_PVR.pdf
which should answer you questions...

You can do with that setup. Just get an lnb splitter to feed both lnb 1 & 2. You will however not be able to independently tune some channels as there will be a conflict, e.g you cannot watch Animal Planet on TV1 and Mnet on Tv2 but you can watch Animal Planet on TV1 and then maybe History, Discovery or Natgeo on TV2. I would advice you get a twin lnb. We used to have single lnb on dualview and it wasn't pretty since my Father preferred Doc Channels and my sis the Entertainment channels.

umm wrong

sd pvr, dual view or extra view (2 single view decoders) only needs a twin lnb
HD pvr needs either a quad lnb, a dual lnb with a multi switch or 1 satcr lnb.

Hd pvr can only operate corectly if it has all four LNB cables pluged in (or 1 SAtcr cable)

I just moved into a new complex and they only have a single LNB dish installation available, I’m struggling to configure how to connect my SD PVR so that all the channels are working at the same time. As I will only be staying here for 6 months, it is not worth the effort and cost to upgrade to a dual LNB, as the body corporate is not willing to pay for the expenses.
My process so far:
I firstly connected the single cable from my dish to my VER connector, and was able to view some channels (Mnet, SuperSport, MnetMovies, etc.). I then connected the single line to the HOR connector and was now able to view other channels (BBC channels, Discover, etc.). I however are unable to view the HOR channels if the cable is connected to the VER connector, and visa versa.
Secondly I got myself a 2 channel splitter, with this installation I was unable to connect to any services. I guess that the channel splitter only have the option of either tuning to the VER or HOR frequencies, so if I connect the second cable of the splitter to the other connector the single become scrambled.
Then my search on the internet stated. I read a couple of Forums on mybroadband and according to them the 2 channel splitter should work. I also found a forum where you change your dish installation setup to include multiple networks on different frequencies, tried it didn’t work.
Can anybody please advise me if it is even possible to connect the SD PVR to the single LNB.
Note: I only have one TV at this point so it would not bother me to lose my Extra View functionality. But preferable I would still like to use the PVR functions.
