I have purchased a Sinotec Model: MP32HU32/U26 not the TOP of line I know but for my needs perfect. So Clearly now that I have the TV I will need a sound system cause the poor speakers attached to the TV has limitations and NFS Shift 2 Unleashed, Gears of WAR II etc needs proper sound to enjoy to the MAX.

My brother was in a good mood and handed me his 5.1 Surround Sound system but I hit a speed bump. Whenever I plug the lead into the TV head phone jack the TV turns off so there is clearly a short somewhere.

I need to know what budget conscious :p sound system I can use with my TV. :D

You trying to connect the headphone output on the TV to an input on the surround sound system?

Rather try connect your console direct to the surround sound, hopefully it has either an optical or coaxial input so you can get 5.1

HDMI from Game to Sound system from sound system to TV... assuming the sound system has HDMI

Else

Optical from game to Sound System, HDMI from game to TV.

Else

composite Red/White cable from game to Sound system, HDMI from game to TV (no surround)

Wait what? You just purchased the TV and it turns off when you plug into the headphone jack? Surely you should get that checked out? Also rather plug directly into the console via optical for proper 5.1

Normal headphone works fine. Seems there is a short on the other sound system.

But still you waisting your time connecting it via the headphone jack, if amp has an HDMI input use that
If the amp doesn't have an HDMI input but does have spdif, get the Xbox VGA cable s AFAIK that has a spdif connector for the Xbox,
