Hi I bought one of these at Makro about two weeks ago as it was R999.00 at the time. I am trying to find the actual brand of the unit. It plays everything I have tried and today to my suprise it played an MKV file I tried. The remote looks similar to Samsung Remotes but my Samsung Blu Ray player does not register the keypresses. I am trying to find if there are any firmware updates from the original manufacturer and if there is a Region Free code for it as most of the smaller chinese manufacturers seem to have. Thanks in advance to anyone with info.

For MKV, was this off an external hard drive or USB flash ?
Do you have any pictures?

Okay, the USB port on the back is only a FAT32 port so 4gb file limit. I burned it onto a DVD with imgburn and it played. I have about 30 HD DVD's and long weekends are perfect for ripping them to MKV and burning them to disk. I noticed that external USB HDD does work but FAT32 it the limiting factor. I will look for an old drive this weekend and try a drive formatted with UBUNTU and maybe one formatted by my macbook. BTW when u burn to a DVD use UDF 2.5>

Also was it on special at R999? As I can only see one for R1699 on their website. For that price it is a good deal, especially if it plays MKV as my PS3 doesn't :-(

While on this, what's the difference between the low end players & the mid range like Sony, etc?

Wouldn't that convert it, so it isn't hd format?

more than likely that graphics chip, transport, DAC and powers supply. However, this low-end players play EVERYTHING! My Rotel DVD player can hardly cope with mp3s....let alone some other file on the CD. Put the same CD is some cheap LG or Samsung and it skips all the formats it does not recognize...and plays thoughs it does effortlessly....

Oh its HD all right i dont do any compression just a straight rip. Also it was on special at R999. I am waiting for it to come around again as it inevitably will with makro. Usually 2-3 weeks after first Special.
