Howzit peeps,

Purchased this 42" Full HD LCD from Makro, was on special yesterday. Was going to buy the Sony Bravia but this seemed like better value for money.
Using it for DSTV now, connected using the yellow and red RCA cables from decoder to TV. Picture quality is good but not WOW!! Wondering if i can do anything else to enhance the picture quality?
Also looking to hear reviews from you guys if you have this LCD as well.

you only looking to improve the dstv picture quality?

Yes, use it for DSTV 85% of the time, 10% of time for DVD's (although i haven't tested the pic quality of a DVD yet) and 5% time on XBox 360 but mainly interested in DSTV quality.

PS: Please dont tell me i should have bought a plasma instead :o :(

well, you actually should of. plasma's are better for DSTV because it is low quality.

however, if you're gonna be playing xbox at 1080p or use a high quality source like Bluray, it will look ama-i-perfecto!

Normal Quality TV looks crap on most LCD's.

Yeah.. that unfortuantely is the case.... DSTV does look shyte on most LCD's... except when they broadcast in WS.... then it actually looks pretty decent.

There is some massive thread on Sinotech and what features you can enable to give it the same quality as viewing on a Sony. I just can't find the thread now, but I'm sure someone will point it out.

Please do! I haven't even touched the settings on mine really - looked great out of the box :D

I think it's time to play around with it again tonight...

 That would be awesome, post the link if you find it.
I still rate this LCD good value for money though.

PS: can i change the way the decoder is connected to the TV to enhance the pic quality even in the slightest?

You can possibly put your decoder on a 16:9 aspect ratio.. and it could pass through or something like that..... you might get black lines down the side of the screen until MC decide to broadcast everything natively in WS.... like we're begging them to do...

How much was it?

I just got myself Creative SBS300 2.1 for my pc. Can I connect these speakers to that Sinotech LCD? I will be getting the LCD/Plasma with DSTV at the end of the year.

OK, thanks for posting the link Postman. I see mention of 4:3, 16:9 etc, what is this? is it the picture size ie: on my 1 the options are normal, panorama,full.....
Also, what have you guys found to be optimal display settings, i left mine on Picture = vivid. temp = warm and zoom on full i think

Yeah I would also say make sure both decoder and TV are in 16:9 mode, you will get black lines down the sides of almost all channels (except BBC World and MM1) but your picture quality should improve and the picture should be displaying in the ratio its broadcast in by Multichoice and not getting processed by the TV and decoder to try fit the screen.
The picture quality on my 50” Panasonic plasma defiantly looks better this way but still not great.
I have the basic DSD1110 decoder BTW and not the HDPVR.
Nothing else you can do I believe except maybe pray that Multichoice adds more HD channels.

Thanks bud, plz bear with me hear. How do i set the Decoder and TV to 16:9, i only have the option of normal, panaroma, full and zoom? Is it one of these settings? Normal mode brings to thick black lines vertically on the sides when i browse between the options - am i on the right track?

From what I remember (too lazy to go check :p), on the TV you have:
  • Normal: to view 4:3 ratio pictures, so you will have black bars to the left and right
  • Panorama: takes a 4:3 picture and stretches it to fit to entire screen (not an even stretch though, the center of picture is not stretched while the sides are "severely" stretched)
  • Full: to view 16:9 ratio pictures, if you input a 4:3 picture it will get stretched evenly to fill the entire screen
  • Zoom: zooms in on a 4:3 picture so full screen is filled, but no stretching, the top and bottom of the picture gets cut off

The decoder I don't know.
