I just bought a new Onkyo amplifier with HDMI 1.4, connected it to my 42" Sinotec full HD lcd tv through the three HDMI connectors (HDPVR, Mede8er,and Sammy blu ray player)but the tv screen just flickers on and off with a blue screen in between, on all the inputs . I have tried different HDMI cables, and changed all the settings on both the TV and Amp to no avail.
The guys from the shop where I bought the Onkyo (they are very knowledgeable) also could not solve the problem , so they have tried another amplifier and at last another tv (Samsung) and now the system is working properly.
So the problem must be the Sinotec ? Do you guys ever used a HDMI amp with a Sinotec tv? Surely this must be a resolution problem? The resolution on the Sinotec is set to 1080p 50/60 Hz. but I have tried other settings too.
Please help

What is an HDML Amp?

I have a sony amp that has two hdmi inputs and both pass through perfectly to my Sinotec lcd.

There is no such thing as HDML, the op is probably talking about HDMI.

afaik the HDMI ports (i have 2) are to get an Image Signal FROM your blu-ray/pvr/media centre TO your TV - yes, it does put sound on the cable too.

what you are doing wrong, is you are plugging a cable which you want for TV-Out (sound), into the TV's INPUT.

so basically:
- those two (or three) HDMI's are for INPUT, not OUTPUT.
- HDMI is for picture, or picture + sound - it's not really an Audio Cable.
- You should check at the back, there are plenty of Audio-Out Connections.

Why don't you use some of the other Audio Output connections, you don't need HDMI for sound IMO
(they should be clearly marked input or output (definitely in your manual if not on your TV)

If you have an HDMI out, then I am wrong but I don't see the point of adding a HDMI-Out because why would you want to do that unless you have a second TV?

I have a Sinotec 50" plasma, and a Onkyo HDMI amp that handles all my sources, and outputs via HDMI to the plasma. Works perfectly....

Assuming all the connections to and from the amp and TV are correct – It might be that the amp is using HDMI v1.4 or v1.3 when outputting on the HDMI and your TV does not support this. Check for a setting on the amp. Maybe you can set it to use Spec v1.2.

(I had an issue when I bought a new TV. The HDMI cable I used worked fine with the old TV and PS3, but with the new TV the picture would disappear every couple of seconds and the TV would display “Check signal Cable”. It turned out that the cable I used was only HDMI v1.2 compliant. Bought a Spec v1.3 cable and no problems since.) Maybe check the spec of the cable as well.

keywords being "to the plasma"

like I said, there are no HDMI-out ports - they are all INPUT

the sound does not go from AMP-to-TV, but from TV-to-AMP - therefore the HDMI wouldn't work.

Sorry I meant HDMI not HDML....it was late last night when I typed the original post.....
Connections for the HDMI cables are correct, I think the problem must be the HDMI version, the amp is HDMI v 1.4. and the tv prob does not support this. I bought the tv about 18 months ago with no problems until now. Is there a way to check the spec of the cable? The amp did not come with a supplied HDMI cable.
Thanks for your input, at least now I know that it is possible to use the Onkyo with the Sinotec...

best to check with the tv serial number if its compatble with hdmi 1.4

HDMI version mismatch won't cause that problem. I promise you the samsung they hooked up to the receiver was only HDMI 1.3a, and your sinotec is either HDMI 1.2 or 1.3. Shouldn't be a resolution issue either. What kind of onkyo do you have? can you set the video to "pass through"?

but why do you need HDMI for Audio man, there are zillions of other audio out connections?

Also bought my Sinotec 42" around 18 months ago, only has 2xHDMI - both are inputs

all you need HDMI for are 1080p Video @ 60fps, audio does not need HDMI !

Yes, does the Onkyo amplifier not output Dolby whatever, dts and all the other acronyms? Why would you need to output sound to anywhere other than the speakers?

Yes I only use the one HDMI input of the Sinotec for the video, but that is my problem! I don't get a video only a picture that flickers on and off, impossible to watch...The Onkyo is a HTS-S5305(B) with 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output to the tv. Audio is perfect!

oh lord, you have one of those onkyo HTIB's. Anyway, it could be worse, much much worse. Like samsung or sony worse.

On with the troubleshooting.

When you plug the DVD / PS3 / HD PVR or whatever straight into the Sinotec, what happens?

And ignore the idiots who say you don't need HDMI for audio, you do need it.

Also, read page 33 of your manual. switch all that crap OFF!!!

I know it is not the best system, but I only use it in my bedroom...
When I plug the DVD/HD PVR /Mede8er straight into the Sinotec the picture is perfect. I agree that the audio is better on HDMI. I did switch all the settings off in the HDMI setup, except for the LipSync.

Right, just to confirm:

TV Control is set to "off"
“Audio TV OUT” setting to “Off"
TV/CD input selector to "off"
HDPVR, Mede8er,and Sammy BRP assigned to HDMI inputs 1,2&3
Maybe disable lipsync while troubleshooting. the mede8er and bluray player should have their own lipsync programs anyway.
HDMI Control (RIHD) "off"
HDMI ARC set to "off"
Power control "off"

If none of this works then you might be a bit stuffed. How old is your Sinotec?

Nope, still the same when connected to the Sinotec...but perfect with the Samsung.
Like I said, the Sinotec is about 18 months old, with no problems until now.

Dude, try this:
- Connect the Bluray, Media Centre and DSTV to the TV using your Sinotec's 3 HDMI Inputs.
- Connect your TV's Audio OUT to your amps Audio IN.

The only explanation for that is that it is indeed a "HDMI" thing.

2010 HDMI devices have very strict HDCP certification protocols. many older chinese made devices do not comply with this strict new protocol set, resulting in a failure to handshake between the devices. You'd either have to find out whether it's possible to upgrade the Sinotec's firmware, or get rid of one of the 2 devices.

Sorry buddy, it sucks I know. I've stumbled into this problem before.
