Hi all,

So I'm not sure of the correct terminology, but I'm trying to find a local SIP provider that supports custom outbound calling within the SIP address. An example company is ThinQ:

The idea is that if you wanted to call +123456789, the SIP address would be: [email protected]

You'd then authenticate the actual SIP user using a query parameter or similar. Alternatively, maybe you can set the outbound number in the query parameter.

Does anyone know what this type of SIP outbound calling is called (to help narrow my Google searches), or anyone who supports it?

In case anyone comes across this looking for the same thing, there's no specific terminology for this. It's just a "SIP account that can translate to PSTN". Unfortunately it doesn't look like any South African VOIP business has the capabilities though. I think almost every local VOIP business is just a reseller of basic functionality and don't have the capabilities to offer anything more from a technical stand-point.

sip uri dialing is to call another sip account, hence the sip uri format sip:number @ host : port

what are you trying to do

If you would like to be able to call a company with SIP numbers, you can always use the Polycom Realpresence App. But to have your own SIP numbers will be quite difficult. We use Expressways to register SIP Devices with a SIP number and this gives us the ability to dial out and someone to dial in. This is mostly used in Corporate and not for private use.

It's for use with Voice APIs that offer BYOC (Bring Your Own Carrier). So you'd use the SIP account for the outbound call and costing.

have you tried getting a sip account and just using its sip uri?

That will just dial the SIP user. I need to be able to set the external PSTN number it must go through to, and it must be customizable on the fly by just changing the SIP Address (or a query param).

the sip carrier must first own the external pstn number to route out via it, like a public ip address is owned by an isp. you would need to own/rent each external pstn number like owning a static IP, for you to use them on the fly.

as a consumer purchasing a SIP account i doubt many sip providers will give you that much control, locally anyway. maybe if you had a commercial account you would have a more advanced user interface to manage your sip accounts and DID numbers.

abroad callcentric.com is feature rich as a consumer. locally try wanatel.co.za with your api and uri and stuff

edit: unless you dont want to receive on that external pstn number, then you dont need to own it, but then it sounds like you are trying to spoof numbers. also i made a mistake the sip carrier does not need to own the external pstn number for you to configure the called id with your own number.
