I'm also looking for one that doesn't completely suck but I haven't found one yet.
You could try linphone (linux/windows/possibly mac).
If you have an iphone, you can jailbreak it and install siphone with cydia.
Apparently there are native apps now but you can google for those.

For the PC, X-Lite is still pretty good ...

http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html

Note, all free SIP clients will not come with the de-facto g.729 codec (due to royalty fees), therefore you'll end having to use either;

g.711 - great quailty (no compression) but uses a lot of bw
GSM - poor quality
iLBC - closest thing to a free g.729, but not that widely supported

The iPhone version (Bria) is not free though, costing $7.99 and g.729 will cost an additional $8.99 ( so ~ R120 total).

I am using SJ Phone on my Windows mobile cellphone and Zoiper on my PC. Zoiper supports SIP and IAX and 2 lines.

Best one for iPhone is Bria - search for it on the App Store

3CX

I use 3CX at my office, and on several client installations, and so far, absolutely no problems, and great functionality. It also has versions for iPhone and Android as well as Symbian S60.

+1 for X-lite... currently using version 3... works well..

Our company uses SIP and we've decided to start development on our own soft phone (I'm going to try for OpenSource but depends on what my Manager says).

Fact is the best is probably Counterpath Bria (pay to use), which is what we use. It sucks however, not as much as the alternatives but definitely not a good piece of software. Counterpath XLite is the freeware version that ships without commercial codecs (g729, g723, etc.) and a few other features have been removed. Also sucks IMHO, and cannot be used for commercial purposes (hence our paying for Bria).

These phones have bugs up the wazoo but what can you do.

I constantly get complaints from the call centers (and myself and other members of the dev team that use it have also had problems) but until something better is available that is what there is :(

We bought ~500 licenses so maybe if we submit bug reports they'll start doing something about it.

Softphone by Acrobits is similar but cheaper and works quite well.

Zoiper is also really good.

I haven't found a decent Mac softphone.

Yip, Softphone (otherwise Groundwire if you can spend the extra $2 or $3).

Mac softphone - Telephone is very basic but good. If you want something a bit more feature rich then try Blink :)

Any ideas for a freeware sip softphone on Nokia Symbian please - one where I can choose any voip provider? My old Nokia came with the client, but the new one's only have sip settings and it's a pain sifting through all the so-called freeware.
