Apologies for what must be a very basic question for many, but can a subscriber of one SIP service, say voipbuster, communicate with a subscriber to another , say lowratevoip, at no charge. I know that Skype users can talk to other Skype users for only the cost of the packet data.

I am only just getting into this VoIP.

You'd think you could considering that the two you mentioned are the same company - BETAMAX.

It depends, some Sip Server only allows calls within their own network, some allows users from other Sip servers call-in only (not allows to call-out to 3rd party server). Or vice versa.

You better check with your SIP service provider first before sign up.

True, but the beauty of VOIP is that you can use various providers simultaneously. You just need a proper IP phone (hard or soft) that can connect to multiple servers and use rules to decide which is the best route for your outgoing call. You setup the rules once and then the system does the work for you when you place your calls.

I want to bump up this thread. I bought a Dreytek Roiuter yesterday and it supports SIP just wanna find out is there any south african sip provider that I can use? and also is possible for the normal calls to be routed through the router so that both the normal land line and the sip calls come through the same line?

FNB Connect supports SIP. Give them a try. Been using it for a while now and have had no problems.

Mweb's Mtalk WebCall supports SIP. Their rates are pretty decent (except their cell price since FNB cut their cell price to R0.99/min) - the most popular international destinations are only R0.35/min (landlines)!

Have been using them for a few years, the quality is good.

And as far I can tell, you don't have to be an Mweb ISP subscriber to use WebCall.

bump again looking for a sip provider as I have a Snom M3 lying around at home that would like to get up and going instead of having a land line put in
