Six months Bitdefender AV for free

No thanks, Windows defender has me covered. Never had a moments issue.

Anyone who pays for anti virus in this day and age is wasting their money.

Do you have the same approach to condoms?

No, I follow the lead of our leader, Jacob Zuma - I don't use them!

Actually I do pay to use Windows Defender - but it is included in the license cost of the operating system itself. I see no reason to pay more, and there are PLENTY of free alternatives, all of them perfectly good.

Incidentally, it sounds like you don't trust free software. I hope you don't trust any Android devices, or Wifi routers - those all use the Linux kernel, which is free. Ever heard of Ubuntu?

Bitdefender is one of the best, has been for a few years now. It all depends if you are willing to pay for the extra few percent protection or not I suppose.

AdrianH beat me to it, but as you can see almost anything is better than the standard protection you get out of the box with Windows. None of the free ones are as good as Bitdefender, Kaspersky or Trend, so I don't know what your point is.

For one thing, that doesn't even test Windows Defender.

For another, a little common sense, such as keeping your Windows and browser up to date, goes a long way. That, coupled with Windows Defender, has resulted in me getting zero viruses in as long as I have been using Windows Defender.

Yes it does, see the dotted line at 90.9 %? Maybe check links properly before replying eh? No amount of common sense can protect you against innocent sites being hijacked though.

Google Chrome is also free last time I checked. Build in phishing and malware protection. Or called SmartScreen in IE.

It's passive protection more than active - if an innocent site gets hijacked you can still be infected by it (been there, done that, looking at you, MSI :p).
