Greetings members

I am looking for a reputable placement agency that I can use for local development, cooperative governance and local government management.
I am a 27 year old male looking for a job in the field of local development and local government management. I'm one of the few students that enrolled in ND: Local Government Management at Tshwane University of Technology, the first group to enroll in this course nationally, majoring in Local Development Management, Local Government Management, Municipal Human Resource Management, Municipal Finance Management, Municipal Law and also did the following modules: Fundamentals of Research, Governance & Politics and lastly Computer End-Using.
I have worked as a facilitator for the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality(LED Unit) on a programm called "Banking on our Future" which essentially seeked to emancipate the previously disadvantaged groups around Tshwane(Pretoria). In the main the project aimed at restoring dignity among the communities that had given up on life. Our duty was to motivate and train the 'indigents' about financial management. We trained them about the value for money, savings, basics of investments and entrepreneurship. I was later appointed by the municipality as Coordinator of the project, reporting to the Project Manager. Due to the financial discrepancies of the municipality at the time our project had to be placed at bay.

Ever since I've been trying to apply for posts but to no avail. I feel I'm correctly equiped with the needed skill. Lack of skill in the public sector is still a hot debate in this country(South Africa) but one becomes a bit puzzled if people like myself are still left on the pavement whilst we could be contributing emmensely through our expertise and knowledge.

I'm even open to join developoment agencies around Southern Africa.

I would really appreciate assistance of any kind regarding this need of employment.

Regards

Hi Mbuso

You sound well-trained and do have a bit of experience.

Did you apply in the normal way (answering to newspaper ads) ?

In my experience, local government is also fairly fraught with nepotism.

You could also try to get hold of local government consultants and get work (or at least an internship) with them.

Yes I have applied accordingly. However I must add that I'm in full support of the new SIU that has been sstablished. this also transpires on the new online application method that has been entrenched for most of the municipalities, especially the metros. So I guess one will have to wait and see if they'll be well executed.

The nature of our public sector is improving, i believe, but i think ther's still a lot of work that still needs attention. Yes I am well trained and do have experience in the field of Economic Development. My passion lies within Local economic development. What also raises an eye brow is when people ask me what i studied, and when i do share some seem to have little or no knowledge about the field. I personally think it's driven by collective ignorance when it comes to issues of governance. When our country was under the apartheid government, collectively the majority constituency fought foward instead of complaining. until such time that the majority constituency in this regard collectively take into cognisence the debate around transformation and emancipation then we can experience change as was 17 years ago.

Well when talking of the African National Congress, i beleive in the party's policies which focus on redistribution of wealth and equality. The challenge lies in skills development, which is vested in the education policy. Again execution is a challenge in this regard. Guys, the public sector is more than what meets the eye. Some people think that it's all about administration etc, there's more to it than just that. Look at the issue around government parastatals and State - owened Enterprises. I could go on and on...Our financial fiscas is strong, but it's always sad when you read reports saying that so much money was underspent.Again there's clear lack of skill that if fit to utilise the funds...

The public sector is in a mess. I know you just started out in your professional life, but you will pick up on that soon enough.

Pre-1994 jobs in the civil service were "reserved" for whites. Now it is "reserved" for blacks. The service has always been bad and it always will be. Reason? It's an easy way for the ruling party to pacitfy voters by giving some of them jobs in the civil service.

The African National Congress' policies which focus on redistribution of wealth and equality will backfire on them soon enough. You're young enough to be around to see it happen ;)
