I have an openweb 2/30 account. as i only have local bandwidth ofter the first 2 days of the month, i cannot use skype/msn messenger video calling. Is there a local alternative to skype or can anyone suggest any solutions. thx!

Have you tried skaap.co.za, I think It's a local company. According to some posts Skype uses "local" bandwidth, it just connects to Skype when you start the call to link the two users, after that it's peer to peer, so if you calling someone local you wouldn't require that much of int. cap.

If someone knows better please correct me...

correct. however you will still need int. cap to be open in order to be "connected". so it will use very little bandwidth but it need some. try keep to under your cap?

QQ Messenger is very popular in SA (Only place in the world other than China where it is popular). Not sure if it supports voice, but check it out

I've got skype running on a separate machine with a payg 1gb - been doing it this way for a couple of months and still have plenty of the 1gb left.

I am interested in this - can you back up your claim that it is popular in SA. I know how popular it is in China and is a major income earner for Mweb, but why do you say it is so popular in SA? MWeb did some major advertising but I have not seen any numbers to justify the claim that it is popular. Not having a dig, just very interested...!

I know this is a very old thread ;) but I need to do something similar. We use a local account for all our branches. The head office use an intl connection, it's mainly for remote support and daily file transfers.

I would like to install skype at all the branches but I'm not sure if it will work on local. According to other threads it needs intl for the initial connection but thereafter runs on local.

We using Axxess local accounts. I see qq is local but don't have any experience with it.

The only other alternative is a local teamspeak server. However I'm not sure if it may be used for this perposes. But it would make a nice alternative VOIP cause in fact if the server is local you only need local bandwidth.

teamspeak.co.za << I'm not sure if you are allowed to use it for normal conversations you must find out. I think this is a great application for a VOIP confrence call. There are some limits to the confrence call feature in skype and add that its international.

As for skype being local. This is not true. The voice is being carried over by the skype servers which is international. I ran a program called proxyfied and it detected no local ips even though I caled my friend in the same town.
