I've done a bunch of reading and I can't find a decent article that describes how to successfully setup QOS and give priority to Skype over other protocols. Most of the articles offer layer 7 QOS and describe how you can identify packets by the header, but I've yet to implement that successfully.

Skype themselves have just confused the issue IMO with this:
https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA...nage-quality-of-service-within-my-own-network

That article talks about SIP. What the heck is Skype discussing SIP for? AFAIK the two are different protocols altogether!

Has anyone successfully setup Skype QOS on Tomato or DD-WRT or RouterOS?

Best way is with layer7. For routeros check out this wiki, the rules are quite hectic, if you're only interested in skype, just search the code and use that regex string with the relevant mangle & queue settings.

Haven't tested this personally though...

Thanks Brandon. My trouble is I may not be using RouterOS though I have experience with it at another site. I'm likely using Tomato at the site. Since it's specifically for a teleconference machine, I may just patch it directly to the router and give that port priority.

Thanks again!

Skype talks about sip as they offer sip trunks under skype for business options.

I setup very simple Qos on ddwrt.
1. enable
2. port = wan
3. packet = htb
4. uplink speed = 80% of speed you are achieving via speedtest
5. downlink = 80% of speed you are achieving via speedtest
6. click add and select the pre configured skype you want to qos (skypeout or skype to skype)

Aaah - thanks for the SIP response... I see Tomato has skype to skype and skypeout so I'll give that a go. What ver of DDWRT are you using? Standard or free?

Hi There
If Tomato does Skype to Skype aI would go with that and leave the rest.
If it soes not give the result you want then give InfinityMVS a go.

Regards

Tim

using flashed dlink dir300 with build 13064 which I had lying around gathering dust, but if you are in the market would suggest you get yourself a linksys wrt54gl just check the compatibility on http://www.dd-wrt.com/ before you buy cuase when you flash it to linux you obviously loose the warranty.

Those GL's are like hens teeth - I have two and love them. Only trouble is getting your hands on one today... that said, I'm going with one of the newer Asus models for the faster CPU. I wish they'd have just upgraded the hardware in those older linksys' and included an sd and usb slot. I dont think they followed their consumers much by ditching the platform.

try comztek or miro, i bought the last two i deployed for a hotspot at comztek, and looking at cisco/linksys site it seems they are still in production

I've got Skype QOS working perfectly with a Layer 7 rule in both RouterOS and Tomato. They definitely both work.
