Heya folks..

When using Skype over ADSL..

If you chat to a person thats Local (within SA) does it use Local bandwidth if you call another local machine..

or does it go over international ?? (seeing as you do connect to international to register a nick etc) ??

Not sure about local bandwidth, but if you use it on a local area network it stays within the network. So yeah, I would think as long as the routers which you are connected to routes it towards the right local person, it shouldn't go international.

Not always easy to answer, but it should go local only since it is P2P. Sometimes it has to make contact or route via another PC called a supernode if firewalls are too harsh... but I imagine it should find a local one, but I could be mistaken.

Try using up all your intl. bandwidth then call a friend :D

Thats an interesting Question....As far as i know it uses P2P as thorin said, and as such itll use local/international bandwidth depending on where you calling. But i have had the problem where by my international was capped and i wasnt able to login to the service, therefor i couldnt actually make any calls. So even if it does use local b/w for calls, u still need international to login. I could be wrong?

I think that pretty much sums the situation up nicely.

How much bandwidth does it use, If I use it on GPRS will it eat bandwidth or will it be affordable?

If Skype uses 8kb per sec x 60second = 480kb (It must send and recieve at almost the same rate... ) So basically 1mb per minute +- (so on Virgin Mobile it will be 50cents per minute) *since VM is 50cents a meg*

Skype.... on GPRS? Ive tried and its a bit too slow guys.... :(

I used skype on MTN edge and the other party could not hear me... i could hear them.

As far as I am concerned, when you log on to Skype, you are using international bandwidth, its immaterial where you connect to (p2p) cause you are logged internationally, so to answer your question, it uses international bandwidth but it is minimal usage provided you don't use your web cam.
