skype blackberry

No VOIP works on the BIS srevers due to compression algorthms- one of the drawabcks of Blackberry

I doubt we'll see it any time soon. The best you can look for is a third party that supports Skype chat. Hopefully there will be a native Skype client when the QNX phones start hitting the stores.

Skype will almost certainly never be available mainstream for BB, skype has signed an exclusive agreement with verizon and how that works is the skype is piped through a normal internet connection thats not charged for, like 8tas 500mb youtube data.

BIS does not allow duplex audio, you can download an old beta of skype and changing your apn to internet will make it work but that will also disable your BIS. IM+ has a skype chat client that has an add supported free version, and then you can get the iskoot with is an attempt at being a very bad skype client, and by attempt i mean they failed hopelessly.

As far as I know the Verizon skype actually makes voice calls using the normal cellular voice system, but Verizon don't charge for it.

iSkoot was okay-ish, never really used it for voice, though. Yep, unfortunately not available any more.

This is one of those many limitations that aided my decision to move to android and oddly enough its cost me less in data on my droid than i would of paid for my bis and with next months price drop it will be even cheaper. BB has many advantages, but it has as many, if not more disadvantages, lets hope they soon realize its time to come to the party and actually try and compete with their competitors.

I agree with CranialBlaze - my reason for deciding to move to iOS as well. I use Skype on my iPad all the time! That, and apps such as the TomTom GPS app which is cheaper than my old/existing Garmin and gets free map updates as well as the ability to integrate live traffic (at a fee, though). I can't imagine seeing an app like this on the Berries any time soon and if they get QNX up and running some time next year, I'll consider moving back to BB after my 2 year contract is over.

Mite not be next year hey, BBOS7 has no trace of QNX and to the best of my knowledge their has been no announcement as to a QNX based handset, the 7 scheduled for release this year are all OS7 based and are essentially pretty versions of OS6, im not anti-berry that's for sure, it served a great purpose for a time, but for me their came a time when BIS actually ended up costing more than what it was worth, using 10-15mb data for a month is not worth R59 especially when even on a berry you can do everything except for the BBM without it and then you will even be able to use the old skype beta that's on demonoid, it may be buggy but it def does work.

If for my next upgrade BB proves itself beneficial again then i will get one again.

Right now having at least chat via skype will help a lot (official skype, not third party) and will save a little bit of face for RIM.

Must be honest and say I won't mind trying out an android, but can't imagine myself moving to it completely. For some reason getting (some) people to use BBM (after getting the phone of course) is much easier than getting them to use skype, gtalk or mxit and I have no idea why.

Well even with a berry and then droid, iphone and most nokias, with a winmob7 version coming out soon. Most berry users i know already have that on their phones so it does make migrating away from berry fairly simple for most. I personally was very reluctant to make the change myself but in the end im happy and found it pretty worth it.
