Pretoria - Had he not been talking to his son in New Zealand on Skype when robbers entered his home, a Pretoria man says he is not sure what would have happened to him.

Roy Hicks, 79, believes he could have been killed if his son hadn’t immediately called the police in South Africa, reported Beeld.

“I am very grateful to my son Mark. This thing was very traumatic for me,” said Hicks outside court.

Hicks testified how he was chatting to his son via Skype on 29 April 2011 in his Pretoria home when he heard his dog barking.

When he went to have a look, two men armed with a knife attacked him.

Shoot-out

“Mark couldn’t see them very well but he could hear the racket,” said Hicks.

His son called the police in South Africa, saying his father was being attacked.

The men were tying up Hicks and about to lock him in the bathroom when the police arrived. They then fled.

One of the suspected robbers was shot dead in a shoot-out with police and the other was arrested and charged.

His fingerprints were found on a bottle of sherry in the house.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The case was postponed to later in the week

Awesome news though how the hell did the son in NZ get through to the police in South Africa? Not even the locals can do that usually.
