Skype caller id / sms id?

Hi

My Skype caller id used to work before [set to my cellphone number]. Now it just says "unknown number" or gives a +32... number for the caller id. I've reset it now, but it takes 24 hours to be activated.

The problem with the sms id is that I never ever receive the sms with the confirmation code [and I am not charged for it]. I have tried it over 10 times.

Also the new accounts page where it opens a browser window is very very very slow in loading. The pop up box from the app itself was better and faster.

Anyone else with similar issues and possible fixes?

I cannot comment for Skype, but may be able to give some insight into this.

Agreements between almost all South African operators (and many overseas) state that you may not pass through a CLI that does not belong to originating network or that is not valid. While this has not been policed very actively in the past, some networks are now policing it, in particular to help prevent SMS spam and fraud in general.

Ultimately, if a call or sms is sent to a SA number, it has to terminate on an SA network (unless you're roaming at the time). That network is extremely unlikely to accept a CLI that is within its own number range for a call that is originating outside of its network. It will simply remove the caller id and you'll get "unknown number."

This may be why the caller ID initially broke.

Of course another reason may be that Skype are now simply using a cheaper route that works via SIM farm termination instead of via a proper interconnect. Some operators may use different routes at different times. E.g. Use SIM farm route during peak and interconnect route during off-peak. In this case, your caller ID may only work off-peak.

In terms of the sms with the confirmation code, if Skype are not sending this from a proper CLI, then it is likely to be treated as spam and blocked by your mobile network.

I think it must have broke when I dialed my own cellphone number from Skype and that was the same caller id set on Skype.

My number is on Vodacom, and I did test on my sister's MTN number with the same result ie. either unknown number or the +32.. number.

Regarding the smss being blocked as spam: I do receive the confirmation sms for the caller id but not the sms id.

Why is that they have these seperately in Skype?
