Skype In or Similar

I have been playing with a VoIP product from www.telfree.co.za

You can dial in from Vodacom and MTN - haven't yet tested Telkom as that only went live a few days ago apparently.

You get your own 087-###-#### number and its really quite cool. They have started charging a monthly R29 fee which is survivable if their service remains good.

But there will be lots of other players getting into this shortly. MWeb and iBurst both have VoIP services and i'm pretty sure they're busy getting their interconnects up.

Also chatted to the MD at VoxTelecom a few months back and there are a few consumer VoIP products on the cards there by the sounds of things. I'd been keen to try some of those.

How much do people pay to call you?
 
I wonder if skype has applied for termination rates? Having a second, local service might not be a bad idea if it saves me money.

I'm not actually sure :D my dad is waiting for his next cell bill so we can have a look see. My guess is that it would not be more than the rate you pay to call a landline from a cell.

From a Telskum line the pricing is complicated - with each VoIP provider running on a different rate. Search in the news section - there were a few articles about it in the last month.
 
@ambo - what is the quality like? Im movin back to SA in couple of months. currently in the UK with a 20MB line unshaped.... so everything that comes down the line is good! Do you think the quality will be as good as skype?
 
I was on an iBurst connection and the other party was on a cellphone so the setup was not ideal. That said - it was no worse than an average cell-to-cell call and about the same performance that I get out of my skype calls. I'm not using Skype all that often at the moment but I would say it was possible a little less latent - but that is probably cause many of the Skype super-nodes are offshore so many local calls cross a few oceans.
 
I have two Skype-in numbers in the USA... and am very happy with the service!

was wondering about SA though... not yet convinced of the cost saving factor. For people living abroad who want to get a skype-in number in South Africa... might be a good idea to avoid international costs!
 
We charge R1.39/min ex vat - pure per second billing,
I know other S.A players are in the R1.50's range.

There are plenty of international VoIP services and they are all great - but pretty useless if you want to contact people in SA... which is where this thread started...

Anyway - back to my VoIP account:
Received an incoming call from a Telkom landline yesterday and despite the call being at midday when iBurst is creaking from network load the call was crystal clear. A couple of abberations and echos but nothing that caused me to have to repeat anything. CLI worked fine. Now we just have to wait for the next Telskum bill to figure out how much the calls cost.

And it would be great if TelFree answered their email.... BIG HINT - many a great product has been killed by bad customer support :rolleyes:
