Hi,

I have eventually obtained my ADSL :cool: and it sure beats dialup;
however my incoming packet loss on skype is around 20%, making meaningful
conversation impossible.
I know of the port shaping, but surely it cannot shape my 512 service to levels below that of 64 ISDN?

greets

Telkom can and does.

Welcome to the world of monopoly-provided broadband.

Simply put Telkom shapes by throwing away a percentage of your 'abusive' traffic (hence packet loss, which in turn gives u a crap download speed).
'Abusive' being pretty much anything that one would want to use ADSL for - gaming,online trading,VOIP,p2p,streaming media, the list goes on.

i am surprised it is so bad, i was on skype the other day at my friends place who has adsl 512, we had 3 people downloading all totalling about 51kbytes p/s so they were creaming the line and i needed to talk to my mate in england so i phoned ovr Skype, there was no lag and about 2% packet loss for an hour call. So try changing your ports and messing around with it. so far i havnt felt much from "THEM" shaping VOIP.

Yup shaping.
Options are unshaped package, or PM Clipse who can explain his unshaped vpn which works very well with Skype.

If you want to purchse unshapped bandwidth for Skype, PM me, we can setup a VOIP only tunnel for that. And the cost is quite low.
