hopefully heaven but probably hell
the other day I discovered Skype which is pretty much a telephone for your computer that works online (VOIP).

Anyway bought 10Euros talk time and made a phone call to a freind in London on their cellphone. Spoke to them for about 7 minutes and it cost me 30 euro cents...

IT works well on Mywireless even with their cap. So yeah.. well worth it
and what blows my mind away is that phone call cost me +/- R2.50.

Skype to Skype phone calls are free and Skype to landlines are even cheaper then the costing above..

So yeah give it a try...

 did you intend to say that it did work with your VISA card?

actually i just wanted to find out more about the problem, is it a permanent thing or just a temporary thing. Cause I talked to the guys from skype support and they dont know of any problems and the also couldnt help me.

I tried 2 different master cards and one visa cards not one worked. All those cards have been used for online transactions before and worked everytime.

Just a quick Q, are SkypeOut support available on Skype itself (i.e. can you call them free)?

Well, you can get support via a online chat kinda thing. But the support you get is pretty useless!! They tell you the same thing over and over again. Basically the person just said that I should make sure my security code is correct and that the address I supply correspondes to the address that the bank has. wadawada wada...

um... just wandering if you guys are entering the correct number when they ask for the secondary code... you must use the four digit one and not the three digit one.

I used a 20Twenty MasterCard Credit card and it worked the second time and so far am VERY impressed with quality and with cost.

certainly kicks the **** outta Telkom!!!

What do you mean, which 4 digit code? Are you talking about the last 4 numbers of the card number? I always entered the 3 digits that are on the back of the card. Skype told me to enter a 3 digit number ?!

Anyway it seems it is now only possible to buy credits via moneybookers. Gues I will have to make an account with them which is a mission since you have to send them copy of card and ID ...

Ok, I tried a mastercard from a friend last night and it finally worked. I get quiet a big delay though. It is JJUUSSTT good enough to have a propper conversation. The good thing is they only charged me R62 for 10 Euros ... that was kinda weird. ... wont complain

Well we are getting fantastic reports and in many cases that its better than fixed line quality.
Many people are on for several hours at a time without a single dropout.

Sounds good!!
Has anyone perhaps have some advice on how I could improve my latency. Would an antennae make any difference. At the moment I am just using the normal modem antennae.
thanks

I use Skype almost every second day, mostly to the USA.
The quality is truly awesome, and if you happen to be communicating
with anyone using a decent broadband system on the other side, (i.e.Comcast cable)
the quality will always outperform a cell phone, an in most cases be superior
to a standard telephone.
Some tips though:
1. A headset is a must….. speakers and a microphone will simply not cut it!
2. Read the Skype recommendation on how best to setup your sound settings.
3. Sometimes It takes about 30 - 40 seconds at the start of each call before the
“best route” is established… thereafter the quality should be perfect.
4. I use a patch antenna … but only to ensure an improved signal to noise ratio.

I am reminded that MW is based on UMTS TDD which is a Time-Division-Duplex
Technology that really performs very well for voip type applications.

As dbnnet says there, when it comes to Voip, this is where the 3G technology just takes over.

Registered today and tried to buy SkypeOut credits with my mastercard, but also have problems, transactions are just listed as CANCELLED. They show up as uncleared effects though on my statement, but Skype's billing system is actually cancelling the transactions.

I did some googling and it turns out this is a common problem with Skype's online payment processing system.

Their support was useless, they just kept telling me to make sure I entered the three-digit CCV number correctly, which I most definitely did. They're obviously having problems on their side, and are equally obviously trying to pretend the problem was on my side or the bank's side (sound familiar, just like Sentech), yet if you read the forums it's obvious this is happening all over to many people all over the world. Eventually I told her that I know a lot of people are having the same problem and asked her if they are working on it. She gave a vague "Our technical team is working on it" reply. When I asked roughly how long until they expect it to be fixed, she basically just told me again to "try again tomorrow" and that she "hopes I won't have the same problem again" and ended the support session.

I guess they don't want my money. What other alternatives to Skype are there?

I tried several times with a visa card and it didnt work. The support I got from skype was useless. When I tried a goBanking Mastercard it worked fine first time.
