Skype Problem: Microphone Muted

I am havnig a strange problem with skype. No matter what I do I cannot get my microphone to be unmuted....I have done everything...has anyone had an similar problem. I can hear other people and the mic works perfectly in google chat and MSN but it just wont work in skype!?!!?!? Was thinkin maybe I should just get a nice USB skype phone and maybe it will work.

At present I am using a headphone mic combo that plugs into the mic and speak inputs and not a USB port...wtf?

Yup!!! have tried everything.....When I do the skype test call.....I can hear my voice..iots doesnt play my voice back, but when I am inputting my voice, it comes through the speakers...so the mic IS picking it up...have tried reinstalling skype.......
