I have been using an Unshaped account but considering switching to Shaped.
Who's using Skype 1.Shaped vs 2.Unshaped

How bad is Skype on a Shaped account and is there any difference in the time-of-day?

I use audio/webcam software quite often and I've never had any problems on my shaped account. My audio is very good on Skype.
The first time I've had problems with it was today - my shaped is very slow in general (intern browsing too). I think it has to do with the fact that it is the end of the month so the users that still have a few Gb's left are downloading like crazy to get the most out of their account before it's reset before the next month starts.

Time of day: I find that 'shaped' is definitely faster/better in the evenings than during the day. I have a SAIX account with WebAfrica.

Hey Mux

Shaped vs Unshaped??
Recently i have noticed far less shaping effects on saix shaped accounts. Whereas before(3-4 months ago) i always changed over to my unshaped account to voip recently its more hassle than its worth. From what i can see the only difference between shaped vs unshaped is about 100ms on a ping, before their was much higher packet loss and much higher jitter.

I have a theory that one of the things in icasa's adsl regulations is that they will prevent this shaped vs unshaped thing and prehaps telkom have started that process.

Provisor being this is in durban - seems things change region by region.

Hey Mux,

I'm using Skype on DSL512. I make both Skyp - Skyp as well as Skype - Mobile calls.

The Skype - Skype calls are mostly mae to Uganda, where the bandwidth is a bit suspect but you can hold a very decent call most times of the days, latency reported by Skype is normally around 2/3000ms. You will see somewhat of a degridation between about 12 and 2, but it doesn't really affect the call quality terribly.

The Skype - Mobile calls are also mostly to Uganda, and the call quality is amazing, I made three 5 minute calls today and all 3 were cellphone quality. You may find occasional audio drop outs but generally, the calls are superb.

Skype Shaped vs UnShaped

Thanks for the quick response. You seem to confirm what I suspected.
Most of my Skype calls are now after hours.

The feedback was much appreciated:D

I use Skypeout more than Skype, and my experience is that Skypeout is better on dial-up than shaped 512k ADSL.

That is real sad that a more advanced technology is a step backwards. Only in South Africa.:o
Thanks thorin1 for a different perspective.

Really? I don't have a dial-up account to test it with unfortunately.

Problem with that is that now we end up paying both Telkom dial-up costs as well as SkypeOUT rates!!

I've got 1Mbit shapoed and have had no problems with Skype Out any time of day... although for more than 1 concurrent call I would recommend unshapped.

Shaped is fine IMO - use it all the time and rarely - if ever come to think of it - have a problem.

As I said - the biggest difference is in latency... dial-up 56k with skypeout to the us=no latency.
512k shaped = latency. But then Daveogg may have a point. I have been using Verizon unshaped for a month or so now...
